it was generally very rusty underneath. Bodywork was super so I didn't really check that carefully (I think it is down to the area as we bought a local V reg 306 in 2010 which was terrible underneath as well). The final straw that did for me was the first time I drove it after getting the AC repaired was to get a takeaway from the local town 5 miles away - exhaust fell down on way home as the hanger had rusted away. Repaired that with some metal sheet and rivets and up for sale Oh I didn't know that David I thought that green Rav you got was a good car. From what I have seen underneath Mrs Ps Rav it looks ok, I did go round it tapping and the only thing falling off was the black sealer that was on it and as mentioned in the other thread it does have a new exhaust fitted. The rear calipers look to be rusted badly and the front brakes might need replacing soon and apart from the pinion leak and now the clutch all seems ok, touch wood but will find out more next week when it goes in for an MOT. Looks like you have a classic restoration on your hands Paul, all 15+ year old used cars need a bit of work it’s part of the course 👍🏻👍🏻

I keep looking at Dons videos on changing the front brakes and it seems easy but theres always that nagging doubt in me mind that i'll cock it up and do summat wrong  Talking of classic cars when does a car become a classic and will the Rav be one do you think??

Sadly the Rav4 will never be a classic even though it’s the vehicle that launched the SUV market, most people have forgot that fact now ☹️

Well folks we didn't get the Rav back yesterday as there now seems to be more complications, think it's the drive shaft seals what have we done

Well I had a call today saying the Rav is done so will be picking it up in the morning. I was told that the pinion seal I provided hasa been replaced but there was another seal beyond that which was the problem so will find out more tomorrow and see why I was told it was the driveshaft seals??

Well Paul, did you collect it ? Yes Jase all done and dusted re the clutch and seal but didn't get to know what was really wrong as the bloke who did it wasn't there?? So took it over to Toyota first thing this morning for the MOT and now they failed it on a broken rear spring and a list of advisories including scratches and bumps on the bodywork I know there was a few scratches but didn't see any bumps on the bodywork so how do they affect the MOT??

Scratches are an advisory? That is just wrong. I would have a word with whoever runs the workshop - Advisories on an MOT are not a great selling feature later on and should not be added for fun. Broken Spring is par for the course on just about all cars nowadays. Get ECP ones - I bet they are way cheaper than the OEM jobbies.
BTW. You've only just bought this car? and it had just weeks of a 12 month MOT left? That was a bit risky, no?

Bodywork on an mot are jagged edges from previous light impacts that could catch a pedestrian ...could be moulding missing and the mounting clips are on show etc Broken springs are common on older cars..last coil on top or bottom can snap off this could foul on a tyre or suspension parts ....they may talk you into a pair but only need one replaced to be roadworthy 👍🏻

Yes David it was a bit risky but we trusted the seller as the last MOT only had one advisory for the rear brakes which they had done all other MOTs were passes and it had been servived 3k miles ago so thought all would be ok and to be honest we were expecting it to fail on more things so I guess one spring isn't too bad??

I guess after what happened to the car I sold recently and was due an MOT a month later (and under 1000 miles since last MOT & Service) I am wary no matter how honest and trustworthy the seller (me in this case!) is.

They did say just the one side needs doing and is not a legal requirement to do both sides so we just said do the one for now.
