AC50 is good stuff, Paul and should do the job. Nevertheless there's nothing to stop you costing it with something further (Hammerite, Dinitrol,Waxoyl, etc). Maybe do it in the autumn before winter sets in?

AC50's fine. It's often used to keep motorcycles rustfree in winter conditions. It originated in the aviation industry where it is used to keep airframes rustfree. So it will be up to your job okay.😀

As I mentioned previously, Hammerite Krust is a good product for neutralising the rust that has already taken place. Just painting over rust is rarely succesful.

Protection for the shroud Try an umbrella, suitably cut down. As it'll be hit by stones; gravel and other crud, I don't think there is anything that would protect it.
On the fuel pipes, I found the breather pipe was thinner/rotted faster down at the bottom curve as shown by your pics. I painted mine with loads of hammerite...and left the plastic cover off on one.....one option would be to slit a plastic reinforced plastic hose and tie it round for protection. tbh, I'm surprised that Toyota didn't change this design fault years ago.
you would need to treat the rust, then paint over ideally..do it while the weather is warm as sitting on cold ground will give you piles.

Since the wan that fell aff had been on for 17 years, dinnae bother coating the new wan, Paul min........it comes black powder coated and will more than likely last longer than you keep the car. Slotting the bolt holes to suit is a dawdle.

This is not really relevant to Pauls motor Bothy, but I had the pipe on my 4.3 changed last November and the guy doing the job - very experienced with RAV's - said that there was much better protection on the new one than he had seen before. Mine was 11 years old when it failed so Pauls has done VERY well. I was tempted to keep the old pipe and draw up and manufacture one in stainless steel, but if this one last 11 or more years it will probably see me out never mind the car!

Just to clear up a technical point: Kurust is a phosphoric acid based product that "converts" iron oxide ( - rust ) into iron phosphate which is a stable(ish) coating on the surface of treated ferrous metals KRUST is available very occassionally from Kingo. It's what he has left over when he's finished his pie!

I'd heard this story of the new svelt Kingo as well. Good luck to him ( and well done! ), I know how hard it is to lose weight. So is he resisting all pies these days? As he seemed to get "paid" in them a few years since, the supply of KRUST might be increasing?

Good ideas Bothy but what about spraying the whole area inc the pipes with expanding foam and cutting/shaping it to suit?
