This is the one that I pulled off mine ... WP_20150517_014 by David, on Flickr I think only one side was that bad, but I took them both off to make it appear more normal for MOT purposes My 2003 RAV4 had a lot of surface corrosion underneath but the covers not as bad as yours, so I wonder if your general underbody will be like mine was?? FWIW, this was my fuel filler: WP_20150517_006 by David, on Flickr WP_20150517_020 by David, on Flickr Again, this was all on the surface and no perforation at all. Used Hammerite Krust to stabilize the metal pipes WP_20150517_027 by David, on Flickr Then Hammerite paint on top WP_20150517_030 by David, on Flickr And then sold the car  PS, in case it is not obvious how to get to the pipe to check... Cheers David :TU: ours is a lot worse and the fact that it is that bad is a concern to what the rest of the rust prone parts are like, ie the filler pipe. I have located the small bolts to be removed and they look new to be honest just covered in dirt, well were but can't figure out where to put the axle stands once it's jacked up or will it be ok just resting on the trolley jack for a quick inspection??

TBH, it is NEVER ok to go under a vehicle with just the jack for support. If you are just talking about the filler pipe you have access to that from the wheel arch, so as long as you keep your body and head outside the car area, should be ok(-ish). When the wheel is off, slide it under the car to take some impact if the jack drops and maybe add a few pieces of wood between wheel and chassis to lessen the gap.
There should be a few points you can put the axle stands on I am sure.

I had to put ours on axle stands recently to paint the callipers. If you look at the handbook, it tells you to jack it up under the trailing arms of the rear suspension. if you use a trolley jack at the same points, you will be able to palce an axle stand in several locations under the rear suspension.
At the front, if you raise the car far enough on a trolley jack, there are several good surfaces aaround the front suspension to place the axle stand.

I feel ill when laying under cars now....so I let Lexus do it for me 👍🏻 Yes Bob think I've had it now lying under cars, this usually happens after about twenty minutes of lying on the floor but today it hit me straight away and knocked me for six

Blimey.... if you want to crawl under a car, don't.... buy a green goddess like what I have and you can actually sit up underneath it without using any jacks/axle stands etc. Only thing is to pray that while its sitting there with huge tyres, that a sudden blow-out happens but even then you'd just need to duck.
On the so called dust/muck shield from the front discs....they were designed to prevent Japanese Factory workers manufacturing the RAV4 from trapping their fingers when fitting the wheels. They serve no purpose otherwise. On my 1994 cars, I removed them as they kept scraping on my precious discs. Then ran the cars for a good few years afterwards. No problems and I don't think their removal resulted in the extensive rust around the rear sub-frame mountings. A 2002/3 RAV4 ? It'll last another 10 years. Or flog it for three grand, and buy a green goddess. Theres one for sale at £2,000 just now...running order; no MOT needed; no road tax; and a 500 gallon tank designed for water but needed as a supplementary petrol tank to save towing a tanker. Oh. And insurance at £80 a year.

Well I was determined to get this job done so took Bothys advice about the Brandy and here we are , Rav jacked up, me seeing double and the plastic cover sort of removed as it dropped when I was trying to undo the bottom bolt and broke Anyhoo here is what the pipe is like. Not too bad I reckon but got it just in time as the surface was just starting to bubble and you can see a little pile of dirt which was probably resting against where the rust is making it worse. I have sprayed it with Jim's recommendation the AC50 after carefully giving it all a gentle wire brushing. So will that do or should I give a coat of Hammerite or summat as well??

No stopping me now as I managed to jack the front up today to check the dust shroud on the other side and looks like it has been replaced at some point as it's in a lot better condition with smooth parts of metal still so will leave that one and just replace the one that's rusted off :TU: Got a price off Kingo for the rears and they are £544 + VAT EACH They will just have to fall off
