You're just too strong Jamie
Out of interest, how many speeds is the rear derailleur?
7 at the back. 3 at the front... Allows for silly slow uphill or super fast downhill.😁😁

I'm supprised you broke a 7 speed chain as they are generally regarded as being the most robust. Probably right with my first diagnosis Jamie - too much power! ( it's not a problem that I have these days ).

With Shimano deore xt deraliur thingy. 😁

I had a fairly unforgettable experience that marked me for life when I was about 12. My brother and I had a very old tandem which we were honking up a very steep hill one Sunday afternoon. For once I was on the back when the rear chain broke and whacked me across the behind. It still brings tears to my eyes when I remember it! The tandem only had three gears. The chainwheel was about 42T with a 13-24-36 combination at the rear. Needless to say, the rear derailleur was a bit unusual, it had two cables running from the downtube to the change arm which slid along a track mounted on the chainstay. The whole bl00dy thing weighed a ton and ran on 26 x 2.25" tyres. We must have done thousands of miles on it.

I have 26" X 2.00" on my tandem... with 9 gears at the back. but I do not think we will do anything crazy, so chain (i hope) is quite safe. I did not select the 10 gears at the back for the above reason, although the chain is the same... Power is not everything... momentum though...
