Known about this for a few months now, but to me personally I love my torquey diesel engine. The sound , the turbo. My only worry is all the valves my old 4.2 had... hope they don't fail on this one.
Really prefer a diesel in 4wd's.
I'm just glad / hope mine lasts for several more years.... with no problem. It's just turned 40k miles.

Can imagine the price of diesel becoming extortionate as they start dwindling down and higher taxes on diesels 🤬

My era of buying Rav4s was short then. No diesel option means another brand.
I’ve kinda altered my way of looking at cars lately. It’s more along the lines of how we live and what a car is capable of carrying and what we can get in it. The Rav actually suits us more now than ever before. I think though I would like a newer car over the next year or so. But it has to be a diesel.

Can imagine the price of diesel becoming extortionate as they start dwindling down and higher taxes on diesels 🤬 As we run onto ultra economic hybrid vehicles and electric ones fuel will absolutely rocket. The thieves that are the government rely on scalping us in fuel duty so while we may burn less or spend big money on hybrids we will still get robbed bloody bling. Worth remembering though is heavy vehicles are not yet viable unless fuelled by diesel.

Funny how things come full circle..... must be close to having lorries driven by steam engines. The thing about batteries is that the real true cost of them is ignored - by way of recycling or re-use. If my mobile phone battery is knackered after 2-3 years and there's no route for it to be re-used or recycled, then I wonder what will happen to car batteries/hybrids. The scrap value of standard car batteries just now is relatively low, and i remember having a battery pack from a knackered forklift truck which was deemed no better than scrap steel. Somebody will waken up when China or wherever the raw material source starts multiplying the cost of materials for batteries.

Toyota are working hard to convince themselves and their customrs that they are taking the right step. I personally think it is to mask the lack of investment in a new diesel engine for a while. I had a call from my Toyota dealership, to try and convince me to 'upgrade' my car at their special event this weekend. When someone try to sell me not what i want, and convince me i am wrong, i tend to be annoyed (he tried to convince me that diesel days are gone, i should go Hybrid). Instead, at that stage i told him i am not interested whatsoever and ended the call. Shouldn't it be that the customer is always right?

For me, the era of the diesel RAV 4 ended with the development and production of the 2AD and the tie-up with BMW for 'economy' diesel power. It's a business decision taken by Toyota and I don't think that they are 'wrong' - only time will tell whether they have got it spot on or acted prematurely ... but they do have the strongest market pedigree in hybrid technology today. Like Charlie, I had thought that I would be looking to downsize a bit by now but reality suggests that I will 'need' a RAV-sized car (at least) for a little while yet. So my thinking this year is that I'll keep the current RAV (2013 and 50,000 miles) for another couple of years - D-CAT auto is really so well suited to the car. After that, and subject to developments, affordability and changes of heart, I'm pretty certain that my next car will be a hybrid (RAV 4 with strangely square wheels! ) - hybrid really does feel to be the appropriate interim technology before whatever comes next after that. Edit: Oh, and, I think we might expect to see some decent deals on the current RAV 4.4 later this year as they run-out the old model and prepare the way for the 4.5 (but I think I'll try to resist! )

I think I am one of the growing numbers who would have bought a new car by now but won’t because I’m A unsure of what happens next and B to invest in another Diesel could be very costly. My car which is very late 2013 Invincible with every option is worth very little now and mostly because not only new car buyers but many used car buyers just don’t have a clue where to place thier bets.
My car has just passed 25K miles and will be 5 years old the end of this year. Now usually I change every two or three years but not this time ...

Same for me, I always keep my cars a very long time.
I’ve got a litre of touch up paint in my cupboard but it’s in 200 colours.

We , their customers want what we want and personally I can't stand being sold to ! If that shop can't supply you with what you are looking for. You shop elswhere... It's the same where I work , we don't sell everything our customers need so they shop elswhere.... 😔 Is it because it's ran by accountants? Hmmmm. Perhaps that's another topic....

I've found that there's a life beyond the Rav. After much dithering, I bought a new Kia Sorento KX2 manual. Dare I say it - after a year, I think it's a better motor than the Rav - apart from fuel consumption of course.
I've returned to this forum after a year's absence - missed the informative advice and banter.
