Just seen a 2011 RAV4 without the outside spare tyre. Thought that went when the 4th generation models were launched in 2013.
enlightenment will be appreciated.

It came in with a facelift to the third generation maybe in 2007. I expect there is a guide to all the models on here. Here is a link to the previous site www.tapatalk.com/groups/rav4driversclub/history-of-the-toyota-rav4-t43.html

Here is a link to the previous site www.tapatalk.com/groups/rav4driversclub/history-of-the-toyota-rav4-t43.htmlReposted to this forum in "Car Talk" :TU: As mentioned, the RAV4.3 T180 was released with the Bridgstone BSR Run-Flat System and TPMS, with no Spare Wheel; Then fairly soon after the XT-R was released (sitting between XT3 and XT-4 in spec) was released with No Spare Wheel, but with NO Run-Flat system (IIRC people - and Dealers - were confused about which RAV4s had Run-Flats and which didn't when the XT-R came out). Then the deleted Spare Wheel feature spread to other Trim Levels in the RAV4 range - but only the replacement to the T180, that being the SR180, had the Run-Flat System. Then when the SR180 was deleted, that was the end of the reviled Bridgestone BSR in any Toyota and never to return; but the Spare Wheel never returned either until the new RAV4.4 in 2013, when a Space-Saver was optional and housed within the boot space.

I noticed in the history reference to the removal of the rear mounted spare tyre on some 4.3 models. It’s still on mine and that’s why I posted the thread.

Just brought to mind a member on the old forum (Jolly Friar), and who will hopefully join us here, went to considerable expense to retrofit a door-mounted Spare Wheel on her spareless XT5. I think there were very few people here who preferred the Spare Wheel-less Option and most would have paid for the option to have one. Other Countries continued to provide as an option as well (plus other options denied to UK Buyers, such as Sunroofs).

We have a 2007 XT5 with both door mounted spare AND sunroof, along with running boards & front nudge bar, do we have a rare beastie then?

I don't think so ... Liz's was an XTR. IIRC, and I may well not, the XTR started life as a 'special' - an XT3 with a lot of additional kit from an XT4 at an attractive price - and, at that time would have had a rear mounted spare. And after a while, Toyota phased out the XT3, XT4 and XT5 designations, replacing them with the XTR - which then had no spare and a can of gunk. I think ...

And after a while, Toyota phased out the XT3, XT4 and XT5 designations, replacing them with the XTR - which then had no spare and a can of gunk. I think ... The FIRST XT-R designation was on the RAV4.2 model so did have a spare of course (ALL RAV4.2s had Spare Wheels) But when they brought out the XT-R Trim level on the RAV4.3, it had no spare at any time at any time. www.topspeed.com/cars/toyota/2008-toyota-rav-4-xt-r-ar49209.html"....in place of a spare wheel there is an easy-to-use tyre repair kit. Deleting the rear-mounted spare means the XT-R gains a wide-opening tailgate"The sunroof option disappeared around facelift time in 2010 I think, same time as when the range was cut to SR and XT-R (so Spare Wheel went as standard fit on ANY UK RAV4). In the UK RAV4.3 models, I don't think there are XT3, XT4 or XT5 WITHOUT spare wheels? Or XT-Rs WITH spare wheels (except Lizs of course! You are quite right. It was an XT-R. By her age of car it was only XT-R or SR around)

The only downside to having the spare wheel on the back was of course the limited opening of the boot. Many added a strap extender but I didn't and it was a nuisance not being able to fully open the door!

Strangely I was told the reason why the door couldn't open was due to it obscuring the reflectors, I got around this by adding a LED/Reflector on the door edge when open. However the other day I was looking at some vans & they all block the lights when the doors are opened & not folded back. I personally hated the partial open door, you couldn't get anything big inside.

Yes that was what I understood but it is difficult to know with so little enforcement people seem to do whatever they feel like these days. I don't understand how the taxis around here can drive around with steps jutting out. Anyway here is a better picture of our RAV russian photo host

I took delivery of my 4.3 XT5 at the beginning of April 2008. It was at the changeover from spare to no-spare wheel and the dealer could not tell me if it would arrive with or without one. It did arrive without one and I've carried a spare ( supplied by the Toyota dealer with the vehicle ) in the boot ever since. I've only had one puncture in all the time I've had the car ( caused by a metal shard on the M1 ) and the Gunk-in-the-can solution would have been a miserable failure. TPMS is the best thing since sliced bread in my book as you don't end up writing off the tyre because it was running under inflated when you get a nail or the like in the main tread area.
