Will get a photo of my ciggy socket a bit later for comparison 👍🏻 Although first impressions is they dont have a spring in the middle, the spring part is on the accessories you plug into it .

Absolutely right, Bob. Obviously had my cranium up my rectum when I posted the opposite! To make amends, here is a photo of the socket in our IQ, which should be similar to Paul's RAV. I still think that there is something stuck in Paul's though.

There seems to be a piece of grey plastic debris at about the ten o'clock position at the bottom of the socket in the photo Paul. I wonder if that is causing the problem? That piece of plastic David is in each corner so looks like it should be there, it's just that piece you spotted in the piccy is sticking out a little more.

Both springs were still intact Jim, the only piece i couldn't find was the central spring pin of the socket at the front. Mrs P said she doesn't recall seeing that when she pulled it out. I have also just tried another socket that goes in fine but doesn't seem to have any power going to it?? That’s good. Have you checked the fuse for the socket? When the original plug was pulled out and disintegrated, it may have shorted the socket out. All fuses checked Jim and they seem to be all ok both the ones under the bonnet and under the dash.

Nope, that top left quadrant in the photo definitely has a small piece of broken plastic in between the grey moulding and the metal sleeve.

I've managed to get this piccy of the inside of the socket so can anyone see if there is summat in there that shouldn't be or does it look normal? Cheers Yes that's not right at all ... As per Jim's earlier post, the socket should be pretty clean and empty as mine is: The gubbins in your photo looks to be a broken-off end of a plug. Note the metal side clips below that appear to be stuck inside your socket: I'd be inclined to attempt to pull those bits out. There may be something snagging the clip that appears lower in your photo?

Any attempt to pull any metal out will, in Kev's words, gubber it completely.

Here's mine: Don't look Charlie - there's dust OK, when I'm wrong, I'm wrong! I still don't like the look of / don't understand the shape of this 'clip': It might be an optical illusion but doesn't look right to me. And, as you say, this 'quadrant' thingy looks to be breaking up:

The 'clip' provides the grip to retain the plug Philip - looks just like mine. As you say the grey plastic seems to be breaking up. Can't see how that would stop the new plug from staying put though as the chipped off piece appears to be below the base level - or is it? All that being said, I did, at one time, buy a plug in USB adapter for my RAV and that wouldn't stay in either. Is there more than one format of plug I wonder?

Paul, have you tried pulling the spring clips on the plug out a bit to make them grip better in the socket? If the spring on the centre pin is strong enough to overcome the friction of the plug 'gripper springs' then the plug will not stay in. Common problem apparently.

The lower clip on Paul's looks 'buckled' to me - but that may be an optical illusion as I say. And, yes, there do appear to be (at least) two forms of plug. This is an old one that would appreciate the 'clips' in your socket to keep it in place: While this is a newer one that sits very comfortably and securely in the newer socket in my RAV:
