A few weeks ago Mrs P pulled the plug lead out the cigarette socket for the dashcam but the plug bit all fell apart somehow, and now i can't get a new plug to go into the socket, it just springs back out. I've tried looking in the socket but can't see anything that could be stuck in there to stop the new one going in, so what could be causing this, any ideas?

Have you tried squezzing the spring bars in at the opposite sides of the new plug as you insert it into the socket, Paul? Sometimes they can be very stiff.

I haven't tried that no but i have also tried another plug that used to go in but now doesn't, it just does the same springs back out.

Have you had a close look with a torch Paul?

I've managed to get this piccy of the inside of the socket so can anyone see if there is summat in there that shouldn't be or does it look normal? Cheers :TU:

Ah, that sounds as if the central terminal (which has a spring behind it to ensure good contact with the main input terminal of the male plug) has come free if its retainer under the spring pressure. If so, I fear you may need a new socket. 🙁

Cheers :TU: Forget what I said earlier about the central terminal; yours looks to be intact. However when your male plug fell apart, did all of it come out of the socket? I would need to familiarise myself with the inside of the socket but does yours still have the remains of the male plug still inside? The earthing springs from the male plug look as if they’re still in the socket?🤔

I suspect that the remains of the old plug are in there. If so, pull the fuse for the socket (or disconnect the battery) and see if you can extract the remaining bits with a pair of needle-nosed pliers.

Mrs P said she doesn't recall seeing that when she pulled it out. I have also just tried another socket that goes in fine but doesn't seem to have any power going to it??

Have you checked the fuse for the socket? When the original plug was pulled out and disintegrated, it may have shorted the socket out.

Getting techy now

There seems to be a piece of grey plastic debris at about the ten o'clock position at the bottom of the socket in the photo Paul. I wonder if that is causing the problem?

AFAIK, there are two fuse boxes, one inside the car and one under the bonnet. You should try to ascertain if the relevant fuse has blown otherwise the socket will continue to be u/s. Pulling the main fuse won’t tell you if the socket-specific fuse has blown.

I agree with Jim , it looks to me like the centre pin assembly is still in the bottom of the socket.
