I think back to some of the innovations that took place in F1 when it was less regulated. It would be much more interesting if there were a minimum of "design" regulations that allowed differing approaches to getting the fastest car. I suspect that a limit on fuel for a race combined with a cost cap on development as the only limits would bring out the innovators in F1. Just remember the likes of Graham Chapman and the younger Frank Williams and what they achieved under less regulation. Maybe I'm just an anarchist at heart They did achive a lot, but unfortunatly a very low chance of survival in accidents far smaller than drivers walk away with a few aches and pains now.

Absolutely Dave, I would imagine that the use of the carbon fibre "tub" chassis and maybe the cage have made the biggest contributions to driver survival in the event of a serious accident. Those old steel birdcage chassis' must have been an accident waiting to happen if you bumped into something.
I'd be the last one to want to go back to "gladiator" approach to F1 that seemed normal in the 1950's but more freedom to innovate would bring back some interest to a sport that seems to be on it's last legs.
