Surely there are aftermarket cats? That being said, it is a 23 year old car fitted with 23 year old tech and safety equipment......

I’m sure an exhaust specialist could fit an aftermarket cat for you 👍🏻

Thank you for that unclebob! Unfortunately despite stating it fits the car it was not the same. Also, the pipes in and out were quite rotten which means changing them as well. Add the fact it might not be the CAT but something in the engine, it was decided, sad as it may be, to scrap the car. So, i am on the look for another car. We prefer Toyota Yaris but wanting automatic it is quite limiting. I also thought it will be wise to wait till end of February as there may be more 2nd hand cars on the market then. Budget is 4-5k, so any suggestions are welcomed.

To be honest in that price range , I think you would be disappointed with the multi mode transmission in the mk2 Yaris.

If you go for a Jazz automatic you need to be aware that whilst most have a CVT and are fine, apart from the usual CVT whine at high revs, there are also some that have what I think is called an i-shift and I personally would avoid them.

A Mazda 2 is another possibility.

Simples - budget of around £4,500..... for that, one could purchais a beautiful Green Goddess in resplendent red; exhaust manifold upgraded 6 months ago; new roof covering in matt black; space for 5 passengers in relative comfort (compared to a 1920s tram); crash style gearbox; the benefit of other drivers moving to the side to let you past (if you put the lights on); loads of extras in the storage lockers, like a hydrant key, paraffin lamps, tarpaulins, a lightweight portable pump that only needs 4 people to carry it, an onboard pump to let you wash the neighbours windows half a mile down the road.... a bargain !!!!!

It took me half an hour to stop laughing... I can spot a few issues though... My daughter live in Bath, and if you have been there you would have noticed that your red green Goddess will NOT go through quite a few of them. Also, i am not sure the university will appreciate it parked in the crammed parking lot... There are other minors like fuel consumption, i assume measured in liter/mile... I am very sorry but i will not accept you generous offer...

Looking at Toyota, how bad is the MMT box? Some places say 'avoid'. It seem that all auto Toyota in my range are MMT.

Looking at Toyota, how bad is the MMT box? Some places say 'avoid'. It seem that all auto Toyota in my range are MMT. My daughter had an Aygo MMT for three years with no problems at all. I drove it many times and found it worked just fine. Of course it’s not a piece of performance kit but as a daily commuting tool it does a good job. A lot of so-called motoring journos have their head up their ar5e.

Looking at Toyota, how bad is the MMT box? Some places say 'avoid'. It seem that all auto Toyota in my range are MMT. If you get a good one they are trouble free but there are many stories of faults on Toyota forums. Best way is to go drive in one and get a long road test …and in rush hour traffic, if it’s a good one then all should be smooth in operation. If it has any problems it will be jerky between gear changes…if the clutch is slipping it’s a £800 plus main dealer only job. The MMT can be used in auto or manual mode, I like the manual mode it gives a sense of involvement in the drive. The Aygo 1.0 engine is well matched to that style of gearbox but in the bigger bodied Yaris I would only go for the 1.3 engine. The older mk1 Yaris Has a traditional auto gearbox in the 1.3 model, yet MMT in the 1.0. A nice last of the line in a 2005/55 plate could be a good car, sadly very few low mileage ones about now .

Side note.. If you spend a bit more …the mk3 Yaris 1.33 is a CVT gearbox and they can also be an acquired taste.

Thank you guys! That is good info. The Hondas a i am looking at are CVT. Going up to Yaris CVT seem to be a big jump in price. Had my eyes on a Honda with very low milage, by the time i called it was already sold... So far, the MOT history is very good, as you can see if a car was cared for...lots a garbage around
