Well,22 years, that is not bad. MOT failed on emissions. 'Exhaust Carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle exceeds default limits' - garage tried to add cleaner to fuel and ran it for a bit - no change. Can it be just the Lambda sensor gone? At this stage I think that time is up (done around 120k miles) Any suggestions?

Did the garage suggest anything else ? You could give the car one more chance and fit a Lambda sensor , then new plugs, air filter and an oil change , that way the engine is in the best health .

The reading was very high he said, according to him, the engine should produce no more than a reading of 0.5 and the catalytic converter should get rid of this. The reading was 0.8, which is very high. Lambda sensor is around £150 and he does not think it is that. The car has done about 4000miles since last service (mostly out of town). So at some point I need to decide when to stop putting money in the car which does not worth much. Yes, I will need to buy another car which is more expenses...that is why i need to think.

If you see any extra money as good money after bad , you need to draw the line now . Trouble is all used cars have gone up in price so what do you replace it with 🤔

The build quality, as you will know, was very high on those Corolla. It is a shame to have to part with it!

If the engine is burning a bit of oil it could be clogging your O2 sensor. How about give the car it’s last chance with a new O2 sensor 👍🏻 …Or a good blast down the motorway could clear the engine out …then straight for an mot retest 🤔

Nah, Menachem…..my Scottishness smells a rodent…..does the guy need a wee runabout for his daughter….?
Try this…..phone him and tell him, fighting back sobs, you are just going to scrap it…..can he not suggest anything to fix it…? If he seems keen to take it off your hands, you will then be sniffing the same rodent as me. Those cars are bomb proof…..it can be fixed……bet a “garage owner” would have passed it if it was HIS wife’s car. Sorry…..not like me to be so cynicalistic.

I know nothing ... does anyone know where they actually measure the carbon monoxide output during an MoT? I'd guess / assume that it is out of the tail pipe?
So it has to be either not enough oxygen going in, or not enough 'action' by the cat to 'oxidise' the carbon monoxide. And, if it is the cat that is a bit clogged, and it could be after 22 years, then adding a bit of cleaner and running it for a while isn't really going to address the issue.
Adding fresh fuel, cat cleaner and taking it for a long hard run might help ... and then, perhaps, take it somewhere else for a "second opinion"?

I onow the car burns a bit of oil, so with the price of a sensor i will gain another year. Issue is that the car is in Bath, and I am not even at home... Since it is out of MOT, and by the time i will get it will be out of tax as well... I will see what i can do. I do not really want to scrap it yet. As for a blast down the motorway, it did it just last week, so do not think it will help.

I'm assuming its a petrol engine.....so I'd try using shell vpower with an octange additive so its able to burn the fuel more easily. I used that with the RAVs which had their cats removed, and the engines passed emissions.

Taking the car to the road is not possible. It is out of MOT and tomorrow out of tax and SORNed (as you cannot tax a car without MOT). Price of a sensor is £160 + vat. There are two of them, one before and one after the CAT. I am considering going to the car (Bath...) And try to measure and determine which one it is. Looking at 2nd hand cars, there is not a lot of good cars out there (considering Yaris, Corolla, Auris from Toyota, and maybe Jazz from Honda). I would rather have more time to look. The Rav passed its MOT today.

It seem it is the end for the car. So the Lambda sensor seem to be working (switching the voltage) so the main suspect is the catalytic converter. It is obsolete at Toyota, and there are none available around. Also, the state of the car is not brilliant - it is basically showing its age, so even if we fix it it might not last. So, it is decision time, and decision sway toward scrapping it. We had it since it was one year old, it is a 1999 model. It took both girls to school, they both learnt to drive on it, it never missed a bit. It went all around the UK many times, and we always trusted it. It is a shame to scrap it, but keeping it on the road will not be wise. Sad to see it go, but that is life.
