Hi
Just joined, new owner of a 2003 rav4 NRG which I bought as an 'activity' vehicle for hiking/fishing/surfing etc trips in all weathers, great condition and very pleased with her. She will only get light weekend type use so hopefully will give me plenty of life back. She was a BARGAIN at £1500 with mint interior and minor exterior wear and tear on 90,000 miles. I can't find faults thus far, clutch may need work in time and she will get a full oil service ASAP.
Looking through the history. She has had a lambda sensor, brake pipe and suspension bush replacements in her life, so not bad. 5 excellent tyres, generally very clean and agile. So Im quite excited and 'think' I got a good one.
Im ok to work on cars myself so Im here to learn and no doubt get advice when work needs to be done. Any immediate tips from those in the know would be appreciated here, thanks.
Cheers

Welcome to the forum! Fill in your details on your profile so we know exactly what car you have. That way we can make sure that you get the correct crap advice.😂😂😂 You have the nicest version of RAV (RAV 4.2 - that’s the second series of the model) IMHO. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.👍

The only tip I can think of at the moment, is to take the plastic shield off the near side rear inner wheel arch, to check if the fuel filler neck is in good condition. That can be a good indicator of the cars life, as they can rust out and leak if it’s been used in heavy salted winters . If all good ..give it a clean and a coat of spray underseal . This was the filler pipe on my 107k example….all good 👍🏻

Whilst I have your ear, Particularly on the rear door, I get a loudish 'crack' noise as it engages in the anti shut mechanism. Sounds rough so I want to sort that. Is it common? normal? and is it sortable?

A big welcome gilly. Brilliant choice of vehicle. Where abouts are you based? Thanks, Im in Newton Abbot, South Devon Unless you count our continental members, I reckon you are our most southerly member then. It's always useful to know who is reasonably local in an emergency. Ravasher and I only live about 4 miles apart and, when I can get hold of him, drink a lot of coffee together. ( We are also both Brummies originally! ) Your back door issue sound like a good excuse for a stripdown, cleanup and lubricate.

Back door check strap is not normally noisy…check the two 10mm bolts/nuts are tight as it goes into the back door. I have a standard check strap available, as I’ve fitted the full 90deg adapted item.

Ref. 'crack' sound on back door, check around the mounting bracket for any actual cracking of the metal around it. Does sometimes happen if the door has been whipped back or strained. Other than that, as Three5 and Unclebob have suggested, strip down and lubricate - or replace if obviously damaged.
