Browsing 3 door RAV4s, (got that itch again and the tablets aren't working) I've been looking at several 3 door cars - manual and auto. Then check the mOT history. From experience, I now look at any mention of corrosion in the rear end, cos thats what killed mine. I now wonder about the feasibility of getting a 4.1 (seen a black one at £1300 on Autotrader with mention its been undersealed, and a previous MOT mentioned rust on structure supporting back bumper lol)..anyway...getting one and replacing the rear body panels that stick to the rear ?subframe. Sure someone posted up amlink to one which had been refurbd. So if I don't win a Subaru this weekend on one of those competition websites, then will start to look more seriously for a 3 door. As said above, some of the auto prices are ridiculous...they are subject to the same rot. Ian did you see this one ? No mention of corrosion on the mot history 👍🏻 www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202203093381937Don't think that I've ever come across an XT2 before. Good price though. MoT history pretty good; only failures seem to have been for things that could easily have been sorted before the test, but lots of folk do it that way.

Two ways to look at it …very rare or an unloved model 😉 no colour coded bumpers, fog lamps or steering wheel controls . im sure fitting a s/wheel off an XTR would give it radio controls and cruise control . Bumpers could be imporoved with a heat gun 👍🏻

Nice looking car but it is an early 4.2 so unless there is documented proof that the gearbox ECU has been reflashed, best to allow £300-ish for ECUtesting to do it if the ECU problem occurs; it probably will.

Has a tow bar so the gearbox could of had a hard life.

Just seen a 3 dor auto in London. MOT history looks normal. www.driveawaydealsltd.co.uk/used-cars/toyota-rav4-2-0-vvt-i-xt3-4wd-3dr-london-202112130474923 Any thoughts? Bodywork looks reasonable. It has a towbar fitting, so towing + auto...any issues to think about? The alloys look knackered but I'd probably change to 18" anyway. Mileage at 137k is ok? The vvti engine is good for 200k is it not ? My Volvo XC90 is now hitting 124k and 8 years old. Its let me down twice in the past month blowing turbo pipes off...a common problem and maybe due in part to many short journeys. Hence looking for a switch to petrol. And losing the 7 seater may cut down on the requests for a lift!

Not a bad looking car and no mention of body corrosion in the MoT history although there is the usual old chestnut of corrosion on the brake pipes- must have been MoT’d at a Toyota dealer on those occasions 😂. Otherwise the MoT history isn’t stellar but I’m picky. Bumpers have some rash but not terrible. Jap alloys nearly always need refurbished at some point- nothing new in that. It depends what was being towed with it. Some folk fit tow bars just in case or because they give good crash protection in a rear end shunt. Pull the dip stick and sniff it. It it smells strongly of burnt fluid and is black instead of dark red then you need to do some research into what it may have been towing. I’m not sure if an additional trans oil cooler was offered by Mr T for heavy duty towing. Good luck👍

Need to replace chain? Price?

Need to replace chain? Price? What chain? Timing chain? Unless it's showing signs of wear (rattling, etc but could just be the tensioner.) it shouldn't need attention and I don't think that replacement was a service schedule item but obviously I'm open to correction. I'm not aware that the VVTi suffers from timing chain problems but if oil and filter changes were not done on schedule, there could be issues, just as with any vehicle. :TU:

I meant to say timing chain but was using the mobile phone and altho its smart, its not too friendly for my chunky fingers!
My impression is that the vvti engine was pretty robust, and after a pal mentioned if the chain had been replaced, wasn't sure. Googling an answer came up with 80k to 120k or if looked after, then 300k. I will call them to ask about service history
