Hi,
my first real post since joining again... forum.rav4driversclub.com/thread/1420/new-member-norway
I picked up the 2017 RAV4 and had a nice 35km home and stopped in the driveway with the engine running, there was what I thought a typical diesel clatter comeing from the engine compartment, it was quite pronounced so I opened the bonnet, the clattering was from the right side of the engine compartment (the end of the engine where the clutch is).
I pushed the clutch in and the noise stopped, (a very smooth clutch feel with no sign of a problem).
Hope you can help. Theres a 2 month warranty for all used cars here in Norway, I´ll go back and talk with him tomorrow.
I was picturing the clutch components and what might be making the noise...... The clutch feels fine, so what might it be?
cheers, John

A 2017 would be a 4.4 and I don't know whether the manual gearbox is the same a 4.3 or even an evolution of it. However, some 4.3s just suffered from a rattling of the gearbox in neutral. It's due to the twin countershaft design and gear backlash with no load. It would stop when you depress the clutch. See: www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/83081-rav4-gearbox/?tab=comments#comment-773626Possibly it's that or similar
(and if you can fill in your profile, it helps when answering questions like these. thanks).

Those shafts can be quiet or sound like a bucket of bolts.....

I had a 1962 Ford Anglia that did that and it was the clutch release bearing coupled with a clutch fork that had bent quite badly.

Sorry shcm, I just realised that I wrote 2017, I meant to write 2007, I read about the twin shaft 6 speed noise and have come to accept it.... might change the gearbox oil, it might not help but wouldn't hurt!👍

Far as I'm concerned, apology not necessary. I kind of figured the "keyboard trouble" out. Main thing is you still got some hopefully relevant info. Seems to be a bit of a lottery whether the shafts rattle or not. Maybe production tolerance? Dunno. (Although Japanese parts often seem to have a very small variance - straight down the middle). If you do change the oil, the advice is to only use what's specified - "straight" 75W LV (no multigrades). Anything else will cause gear selection problems. Alternatives have been tried in the past.

Changing the oil makes no difference to the noise. My best mate has the car now, is at 99k miles and it still makes the same noise. Pain, but doesn't seem to have any effect on the drive, reliability, etc.
