Hi On my way back from the airport late Friday afternoon after picking up my brother and his partner when there was a bit of a bang and the ignition light came on and steering got heavy, pulled over and had a look and as suspected the belt for alternator, steering water pump etc had snapped, got towed to a garage, and currently have a hire car paid for under my insurance (that is another long story but for another time) spoke to the garage who had a look at the car, expecting them to say that I can pick it up later, only for them to say sorry not that simple, they recommended changing the tensioner which I gather is not a 5 minute job to do so wont get the car until the end of the week. that in its self is a bit of a pain but such is life.
The worst part is that they recon that the problem was caused by the AC compressor sticking (they say that it is in poor condition), which is something that they aren't equipped to do (so it is not a ploy to get more work), they are going to change the belt and tensioner and advise that I don't use the AC until I can get it looked at properly.
I have had a quick look on the internet and it appears as if you can pick up a second hand compressor for about £100 and a recon one for about £250, I haven't spotted a price for a new one, does anyone have any experience in this area, I realize to remove it means properly emptying the gas, but I think I know someone that can do that for me, but is it worth just getting a second hand one and chancing it or paying more for a recon one? does anyone know if they are all the same for the 4.2 petrol/diesel, the Haynes Manuel dosen't indicate that they are different.
I will of course try and get some quotes to do the job properly, but I think it will be too expensive.
Any thought welcome
Dave

Best value for money would be an air/con specialist that can replace/replace the compressor and remove and re-add the gas all in one go, we have one local in Kent that are mobile... must be some your area 👍🏻👍🏻

I now have the aircon going again, after getting various silly quotes for repair, i went for the cheap option, bought a tested second hand compresser for 90€ 25€ for a dryer kit and a local garage I was put on to degassed swapped out the compresser regassed it for 114€, total 229€ less than a quarter of some of the quotes I had. So just cross my fingers now. Dave
