Jamie remind me.... Has Toyota diagnosed a failed head gasket ? If so do you know what tests they did ? Hi Charlie, no.... they said they'd done some tests and said the car needed a new engine. I must admit I'd like to know what tests they did , wouldn't mean a thing to me though. Jamie from your descriptions so far and given the information in this thread I at least can only deduce that your head gasket is why they are saying the car needs a new engine. Its getting a wee bit complicated..

Things have just escalated, had a call from Toyota - the warranty company want my vehicle for inspection at local Toyota a.s.a.p They don't even want it driven anymore. I said if they have my car , I need a loan car. As it's possibly for a week or so. I don't think that's unreasonable , says I'm entitled to it on my warranty document. Just for clarification.... you say "The Warranty Company"? Is it an actual Toyota Extended Warranty you have? or is it a Warranty that you bought from a Toyota Dealer? just curious about your wording. Toyota Dealers do sell non-Toyota Extended Warranties as well, for non-Toyotas and Toyota cars that are not 'Used Approved' (I think that is the term?) But yes, I cannot see they can deny your request for an courtesy car (don't call it a loan - they may ask for money!) - They can deliver it when they collect your car (as they don't want it driven, you can't take it over there). It's a genuine Toyota GB extended warranty. Sold to me by Lancaster Toyota Colchester a month after i bought the car Trouble is they changed name to Steven Eagell Toyota Colchester a couple of years ago. Well either way it has to be driven or car transported to them , they're just 3 miles from where I work.

I would still have a new car, but it would have been at a more convenient time of my choosing!

The good news has got to be it's a Toyota extended warranty.
What's a new engine in a Rav to a company like Toyota - pocket change, if that.

You get a very clear policy position with Toyota, albeit a bit strange sometimes (Toyota replaced the Air Con Radiator on my Celica GT4 as they noticed a small cold spot on it and the Air Con was still fine (called them as the electric fan failed), but at the same time they refused to replace a plastic switch top on the electric window that broke 3 weeks after I bought the car as 'plastic trim not covered')

Nevertheless, I've never known them to quibble over an approved warranty issue. Jamies's problem will get sorted satisfactorily, I'm sure.

A bit of info....
I called into DNA today which as some of you know is run by 2 Toyota Master technicians. So I quizzed David about these later 150 engines.
It is Not rare at all for these engines to fail in the same way the early engines did. David has replaced several.
The likely causes are.... Short journeys which coke things up. Poor fuel And a new one to us is that the 5th injector has been known to constantly weep causing exacerbation of the problem.
The spattering is an indication of a blown gasket but when I mentioned the coolant turning dark there were a few puzzled brows ..
Could be many things which would complicate the matter..
I also mentioned that the warranty company may elect just to do the head gasket.
David said that first things first the inlet manifold must be removed and examined to see how coked or blocked it is.
The head gasket if replaced could be a total solution IF the block face is perfectly flat and in good condition. The head would be skimmed anyway.
To prevent further coking up he suggested removing the EGR valve and blanking it. But in order for this to work the engine would need to have its ECU tweaked. And / or Remapped. This means the sometimes dodgy 5th injector can be eliminated. It takes 1 litre of diesel every time a regent takes place apparently. Not good for the engine..
But wait I hear you say the Denso ECU cannot be broken into ? Well it can now. Streffords Of Worcester can now do the alteration and remapping of the Toyota Denso ECU.
Streffords are a family run mostly motorcycle based automotive trader. Nathan the son is making quite a name for himself doing mapping. If anyone wants accurate info better than I can explain they might be worth a call. Tell him Chuck the Martial arts instructor told you to call.
David squarely blames the ultra restrictive EGR on the early engines which was not completely resolved when the engine we call the 150 with its modified and water cooled EGR came about.
The 4.4 is fine as all the issues were ironed out by its introduction.
So you 150 owners please note.
Never use cheap diesel OR add a quality additive like Millers diesel treatment. Short journeys are not ideal. I would buy only premium fuel AND add a diesel treatment if it were me Or there is the choice now of deleting the EGR valve and remapping and altering the Denso ECU.
The biggest culprit of course is the ridiculous emissions these engines were forced to adopt so the cars could meet regulations.... Mmmm

Crikey... Good info there Charlie.
Well , yesterday when Toyota rang me to say the warranty company didn't want my car driven anymore. I very politely asked for a courtesy vehicle to use as transport whilst mine is inspected. He said he'd ring back later
But 24 hrs later, still no reply.
I need transport , I'm having to drive the Rav as I've nothing else.
I need to get to work , we've no public transport here.
I would try The AA but I hav'nt actually broken down yet. It's a dilemma.

Crikey.... Lot of good info there , thanks Charlie 👍
Well , yesterday Toyota rang me to say the warranty company didn't want my car driven anymore. Until it had been inspected by the warranty company.
I replied , I needed vehicular transport to use whilst my car as out of use.
The chap said he'd get back to me....
Well , 24 hrs later... nothing.
So , I'm having to drive my Rav as I've nothing else to use.
I live remotely with no public transport either.
It's a dilemma.
Just realised I've almost double posted 😂
