Serious issue here folks, after 4 years of faultless running the Rav has thrown a complete wobbly. Everything was fine earlier, next door are having their drive paved & the guy was digging out with a jiggerpick. He rang the bell & asked the wife if she wanted to move the Rav in case of flying stones, she moved it up the road slightly. Then after he finished she moved it back onto the drive both without issue, but when she came to lock the Rav it won't lock. She went & got the 2nd fob & again the car won't lock off either the fob or button on the handle.
I've come home & gone through the same process, car won't lock/unlock on the fobs, you can't start the car as it claims there are no fobs present. The doors lock/unlock on the door switch, if you take the key out of the fob the doors lock/unlock on the key. It's just as though the immobiliser has lost it's program. I took the battery off for 10 minutes & reconnected with no changes.
If you lock the car with the key wait a 1 minute, then unlock with key, open the door & press a button on the fob the Rav does a long single bleep. you can also see a small red light on the fob when you press the button. The batteries in both are 11 months old, I can't see both failing on exactly the same day.
Could it be a fuse, if so anyone know which one?

first step for me would be changing the batteries in the fobs. If not cured, open the door with the manual key, hold the fob very close to the start button. If it starts, take it somewhere a distance away and see if it works normally there. After that I'd be worrying about RF interference. I locked mine up one evening outside our local school in a place I'd used hundreds of times. On this particular occassion it wouldn't open the door when I came out. I used the key to get in and then adopted the procedure just described - and it started! A Saab estate next to me had to be left overnight with the same problem. It started fine next morning and the problem was put down to a RF burgular alarm circuit between the building we were outside and the main building.

I too would be checking for any interference locally. I, along with a few close neighbours, had a similar problem and the culprit turned out to be the battery in my remote weather station sender going flat and causing the sender to go off frequency.

Okay so gone back out, if I hold the fob near the drivers D pillar then I can get them to work, going to buy new batteries tomorrow just in case. I have no idea how to start searching for RF interference, so any pointers would be gladly received.
Edit:- If I also hold near the Start button I can start the car, so tomorrow I'll drive somewhere else & see if the fobs work before changing the batteries.

If you open the car, will it start with the fob held next to the button?

i had same problem last year. must have been local interference. i spoke to local Toyota dealer who seemed to be aware that this can cause an issue. couple of hours all ok.

Some dealers change the fob batteries at every service. I wouldn't be supprised if all works well in the morning, but change the batteries anyway and keep a spare in the glovebox.
It gives you a cold feeling in the guts when it happens though!

If you have near neighbours with similar entry/start systems, ask if they have had or are having problems. My issue was sorted by a neighbour who was having similar problems in starting his car. He called the DTI and they sent a detector van. The techies checked all around the area with sensor devices and pinpointed my weather sender unit that was in my open front porch. They removed the battery and the problem went away. I put in a new battery and re-sited the sender in the back garden and have had no further problems. Glad the neighbour called the DTI since, apparently, had I called them in and it was me causing the problem they would have charged me something like £250.

I've got one of those things David - I'll have to keep an eye on it. I've taken to changing the fob batteries with every oil change as they are fairly cheap if you buy them in strips of, say, 5. I used to keep my keys in my touser pocket all the time but I've stopped doing that as I've inadvertantly unlocked the car on odd occassions, so I wonder if inadvertant button presses ( in my pocket ) gives the batteries a bending even if it's too far away to operate the locking system?

Can't leave the spare in the glove box or the car won't lock, unless I suppose I put it in a Faraday case.

I had to do some work on a product that was subject to the ElectroMagentic Compatibility ( EMC ) regulations about 20 years ago. If I remember correctly ( Help! SHCM ), you are not allowed to sell equipment that causes RF problems to other equipment AND niether are you allowed to sell equipment that can be interfered with by other equipment. I thought at the time that it was one of the best drafted sets of regulations that I've ever come across as it catches the problem from both directions.

No sorry, the spare battery in the glovebox.

You can’t have enough spare batteries...I bought a 10 pack on eBay cheap as chips 😉

Annoyingly these were Duracells only put in 11 months ago, whereas the ones before we're in when we got the Rav over 3 years before. Hence why I didn't think it would be the cause, ours are 1632's though
