Hi If you haven't got your windscreen covered on insurance, I would do it now! Driving home last week a stone was thrown up and hit the windscreen, I thought that I had got away with it as there was just a little star crack that they can repair with epoxy or whatever they use, but after I had driven 5km it turned into a crack about 20cm long.
Anyway rang the insurance and was told to take it into Carglass (not sure if they exist in UK) and it would be covered apart from the excess which for me was 25% up to a maximum of 120€.
Anyway I got it done yesterday and had to pay the maximum of 120€ as the total bill was 910€ 360€ for the windscreen its self, the rest was all the fitting kits labour etc. I will be interested to see what this does to my insurance premium when the renewal comes around.

Carglass appear to be the same organisation as Autoglass in the UK - they have exactly the same logo etc.. €550 for fitting etc. - if that really is the correct figure - seems quite outrageous to me, but that is probably a result of a cosy, monopolistic relationship with the insurance cartel ... again ... and we just get to pay for it within our premiums. In the UK, glass repairs and replacements don't (shouldn't) impact either your no claims or your premium. When you renew or switch insurers they don't ask if you've had a windscreen replaced.

To be fair the actual labour cost wasn't too bad, it was all the bits of trim etc that put the price up, i do have a full breakdown if you are interested but it is in French. Dave

I had a new windscreen fitted a couple of years ago by a local independent that came highly recommend and the whole cost including the Labour was £110... All done in an hour or so.

Crumbs Jase - I'd no idea that there were any independents in this sector. If you are happy to pass on their details I'd be very interested. I've had one repair done to the 4.3 plus one replacement ( Autoglass ). The replacement was done under apalling weather conditions on my drive. The only problem was that the cutting wire snagged the chassis number plate at the bottom of the windscreen and almost cut it in half. Whilst the screen was out I did a 95% repair with a planishing hammer so, not a bad outcome. I've no idea what the cost of the job was as it went straight through my insurance ( £70 excess ) and had no effect on my premium or excess.

I've never use these guys and have no idea how good, bad or indifferent they may be but mywindscreen.co.uk claim to be able to put you in touch with a local "auto glazier" and the example prices shown look fairly reasonable. They appear to be one of several such outfits ...

I've had several windscreens replaced by the outfits that insurance companies use.... and mostly their work was atrocious... The problem has mainly been the lack of sufficient sealant/goo around the metal frame, which causes rainwater to enter the cabin leading to damp carpets and rust. I have used an independent chap to remove windscreens and re-seal them using the correct amount of sealant.... the chap explained to me that fitters skimp on adhesive/sealant so they have extra for homers! Apart from the water ingress problem, on the RAV4.1 certainly, the windscreen is part of the bodyshell and adds to its rigidity. So with too little adhesive, flexing just causes the seal between glass and metal to deteriorate = more incoming water. The solution is to stand and watch the guy replacing the windscreen, ensuring tons of goo is added!
