I've had the 4.3 for 10 years now and replaced nothing except service items and the battery during that time. At the beginning of the week I filled up as I usually do every 3 - 4 weeks! Parked up at home with no problem until I noticed later in the day a small wet patch just in front of the rear nearside wheel. Investigation revealed this to be fuel. Further investigation revealed that the pipe from the filler to the tank was corroded in the area covered by a loose corrugated plastic sleeve fitted around an exposed 90 degree bend just before the pipe connects to the tank. As I'm up to my ears in other things at the moment, I got my local independent Toyota specialist to change the pipe for me. He told me that they had done a few of them and they all failed in just about the same place. The new pipe has a much better protective coating and no corrugated sleeve so hopefully it will last at least as long as the original. The cost of a new pipe was £182 which made me wince but, as it's the only failure in 10 years ( if we ignore the engine replacement! ) I guess that it's not too bad. Having seen the amount of muck trapped in the corrugated sleeve and the wonderful opportunity it created for corrosion, if I had a car with the same design of filler pipe where the pipe had not failed, I'd be inclined to remove the sleeve and treat the exposed area with some other sort of surface protection.

It is a common(-ish) issue on the RAV4.2s and 4.3s (maybe one to come on the 4.4s as Toyota didn't seem to learn when they brought out the 4.3?)

Had the plastic shroud off mine back in August to check for that very issue Chris. All seemed fine since I had previously given the pipe a good clean and generous coat of Dinitrol about four years ago. Washed out what muck there was and applied another coat of Dinitrol for good measure. No idea how much longer it will serve but well worth doing every few years, if not more regularly. If anyone else is tackling this, just be aware that the screws can get rusted into the rather thin mounting brackets behind the shroud and the brackets can break off. A good soak overnight with a penetrating oil is helpful and then a coat of grease on the threads before re-assembly is worthwhile for easier inspection later down the line.

Think mine being the 2012 version is the updated coated filler pipe. But.. I still gave mine a good coat of waxoyl all around earlier this year. Including around the base and that corrugated cover pipe area. I also waxoyled both sides of the underside too. But brushed all loose muck off beforehand. I even thought of doing the boot underneath ?

The new pipe came without the corrugated sleeve David and the protective coating was much better than the original. Hopefully the 4.4 has this sort of design. If I ever had to do the job again ( myself ) I'd probably use a couple of layers of self-amalgamating tape to protect the vulnerable area.

You can get copy parts on eBay but they are rubbish. The Toyota part is worth every penny by comparison.

Had the same on the 4.2 I realised when filling up could hear it gushing down and when I looked it was leaking like anything. Had a local garage donouts paod £130 bought the pipe from Kingo. Had the 4.3 checked at same time and that was ok
