Hi all,
I have a 2008 RAV4 T-180 D-CAT. Following a 60/70mph cruise on the motorway the other day I noticed my instant MPG gauge was dropping by 10-15mpg for a split second, then returning to a normal MPG level every 30-60 seconds, when this drop occurred, I could see a pile of black/brown smoke coming from my exhaust.
I am aware that the DPF generally goes through a cycle of cleaning itself under cruising speeds, but conscious that the above occurs every day (I travel between 40/50 mile a day). Could there by something else that is driving this issue or am I overthinking it?
Thanks
Jack

Hopefully no pink splashes, and a full expansion bottle, negates my fears that your particular (best ever) model of the Rav may have had the dreaded buggert cylinder head syndrome.
Respect to anybody with the courage to strip oot dashboards.......gives me the willies.

Maybe EGR needs a clean out - assuming the T180 has one.

My one was always clean with only the lightest coating. Bit I did run it on premium fuels. The Guys at DNA blame the whole of engine problems on that restrictive EGR. A MUST do job for this member is to strip and clean immediately. Not all failing engines send coolant out of the expansion tank.

My mate has recently run two T180s and they both do the “red arrows” thing on a frequent basis. It keeps the boy racers back a bit and is nothing to worry about.
Cleaning the EGR certainly won’t harm - his stuck open not long ago which pleased the boy racers for a short while but it’s back on form now. A can of BG244 at least once a year is a wonderful thing.
He’s got one T180 and one 150 now so that’s the end of the EGR cleaning on the latter.

Thanks all. Will take your advice and check out the EGR. Yeh I agree the t180 is a wonderful machine. Smashes most on the road (I also have it remapped to produce ~210hp, so it’s a mean machine). But such a gas guzzler!

Had so much soot that I was surprised it was still running. Hopefully that’s cleared the issue. Thanks all for your advice.

Wasn't aware that re-mapping the ECU was possible on these motors. Who did it?

Wasn't aware that re-mapping the ECU was possible on these motors. Who did it? www.quantumtuning.co.uk/car-remap-tuning-remapping.aspx?make=Toyota&range=Rav-4Used this link to find my local dealer. Cost me £225. To be fair I was initially remapping in the hope for better MPG gains. Gain 1-2 mpg on average probably not enough to warrant the cost but the performance gains are great. It’s a high torque engine so removing the torque limiter with the remapping has helped release the full potential of the engine.

It is not possible to remap the standard Denso ECU. The reason I’ve picked up and am mentioning this is because IF someone has managed to hack into your ECU it could be the cause of your problems. Messing around with the Denso ECU could completely bugger the whole lot up.

Not sure, but I know it’s made a difference.
