Hi
I am sorry if this has been covered before, I did do a search but didn't find a post that covered what I wanted to know.
I am in need of some new tyre's, the ones that I currently have are what were on it when I bought it 18 months ago.
Front Dunlop SP Sport 9000 Rear Achilles Desert Hawk Spare Federal Couragia SU
The SP sports are getting close to the limit so they defiantly will need changing soon, The Achillies desert Hawk's had a good amount of tread, but one of them is making a noise on each rotation, this is one of the noises that I have been putting down to a mechanical problem but the noise had been getting gradually worse over the months.
I cannot visually see any problem with either Tyre the walls look parallel I can see no uneven wear on the tread but if I put them on the front the sound changes and I can actually feel a small vibration through the steering wheel which ties up with the noise (not like the usual vibration you get with balancing problems).
I will be going to my local tyre place tomorrow to see if he can find anything wrong, hopefully he does and it is something that he can fix, but worse case scenario I will need some new tyre's.
If this is the case I intend to keep the remaining Desert hawk as a spare, the Federal has good tread but is directional and the only time that I have had to use it I had to put it on in the wrong direction.
Bu then it is down to what I can afford to put on the other four.
I have been looking at this website.
From looking at the reviews I would like to put the Michelin Latitude Cross on but if I do that it is going to cost me just under 500€ fitted and I really cannot afford to do that at the moment, and wondered if anyone has had any experience with any mid range/budget tyres that might be worth looking at.
I do not do high millage (about 5-8000miles a year) Some but not a lot of high speed driving maybe every couple of months I might do a couple of hours on a motorway at 120-130kph (70-80mph) Most of my driving is on fairly winding main roads and we are at about 450 meters so we do get a bit of snow in the winter but not enough that I would bother with winter tyre's, if it is that bad I don't go out (I also have a disco that I can use if it is that bad).
Anyway if I can get the cost down to somewhere near 300€-350€ fitted I would be happy (prices seem to be roughly the same numbers between UK and France, ie a £100 tyre in UK is about 100€ in France).
Any suggestions welcomed.
Dave

I used Falkens 245/45x18 on my 4.1s as I found them a good tyre and able to take the thrashing I gave them on the 1/4 mile thrash and also 100mph stuff on 'roads'. I had a blow out with one of them on a front wheel and other than a slight drag, felt nothing until I pulled into a layby and found the tyre burst and a bolt hole in the tread where a bolt/large nail had ejected at 100mph. When it comes to standard road use, then there are a few good options. What size are your tyres? Back in 1994 when the RAV was launched in the UK, the ONLY tyre available was a Dunlop at £160 each!!!! I've not been a great fan of Dunlop ever since. Michelin do some good tyres but my experience has been that they are a soft rubber. Other thing to consider is if ou are usingthe car at speed with a full load.

If you are looking to replace all four I'd be looking at All Season tyres these days and there is an increasingly wide range to choose from. You don't say what size you need but if that's 215/70 R16s I'd suggest Vredestein Quatrac 5 SUV as being a pretty perfect match for your requirement for a mid-range tyre - £85.20 each on MyTyres ... and Charlie rates them very highly!

Nokian all season tyres are brilliant. I had them on the 4.3. Excellent reviews too and highly rated by autoexpres.i think they were about £90 a tyre when I bought them. If you don’t go for them then as Philip has suggested Charlie has given them a good review.

When I next change my tyres for our Honda CRV, I will buy Michelin Cross Climate. At the moment they are £131 fitted so not the cheapest but great tyres. For a second car I would perhaps go for cheaper tyres but have a set of four all matching.

I've got Uniroyal all seasons on both of the Saabs and they are proving to be very good with good wear. They are made by Continental so quality is top notch.

Hi
I have been down my local tyre place, and he is definite that the noises that I am getting are due to the Achilles Desert Hawk's on the rear, he even shut up shop to come out for a ride in the car to listen for himself, he says that the noise is due to cheap tyre's getting old (nearly 6 years) and did point out where they are starting to wear unevenly. He said that it wasn't a problem to continue using them, just annoying but suggested that I replace all four as they probably wont pass the new CT (French MOT)in the spring.
As the front ones will need changing soon they is probably what I will do.
He has suggested BFGoodrich Urban Terain as a better tyre for 450€ fitted and Kormoran SUM.SUV as a cheaper option at 389€, apparently they are a polish company that is now owned by Michelin.
His prices a a bit higher (30-50€)that the main stream tyre places and I cam probably get him to drop a little bit, also he is a good guy when I had an exhaust problem last year he let me jack the car up on his car jack so I could get underneath to see what the problem was and didn't want any money (although I did persuade him to take 5€ for his trouble) so I would like to get them from him.
But I wondered if anyone had any comments about the tyre choices, as there is only about 60€ in it I am tempted to bite the bullet and go for the BFGoodrich.

Wotsha Dave.......BF Goodrich tend to be right chunkybtread boots, so if noise is a consideration, best avoid.....Oor Jamie found that out to his cost with runky chubber.....
One tyre we had on wife's 3 door proved very quiet........Goodyear Efficient Grip. These are kinda mid priced, and come in all weather AND winter guises.
Nurra fing.......you seem to have found a French garage which is actually HELPFUL........? You been at the Hoose No.9.....? (Jase......Chateauneuf.....)

Dave Do let us know how you get on with the BFGoodrich Urban Terrains ... On paper the Urban Terrain is a comparable mid-range tyre to the Vredestein Quatrac 5 SUV - not quite so good in terms of fuel economy but otherwise a similarly priced and rated all season tyre. I hadn't heard of Kormoran before but the Kormoran SUM.SUV could be a budget alternative though it is clearly a summer tyre. Kormoran don't [yet] do any all season tyres.

The Urban Terrain has the same noise profile as the Quadtrac 5 (70db) so not ultra quiet but hardly noisy ... (Edit: didn't Jamie have BFG All Terrain tyres on his - with that nice white writing?) The Goodyear Vector 4Seasons SUV would, of course, be better still (at around 68db) but they are regarded as premium tyres and priced accordingly. [Personally, I'd go for the Michelin Cross Climates (69db) as fitted to my wife's car but they are more expensive again!]

Hi
Thanks for all the info, as far as noise, the spec I found on the BFGoodrich Urban - Terrain said that it is slightly quieter than the Michelin cross climate and the tread pattern doesn't look much chunkier, the BFGoodrich all terrain is a much more agricultural tyre a friend has them on his landcruiser but I wouldn't have said that they were particularly noisy, but maybe is is masked by the 4.2l motor.
Currently leaning towards the BFGoodridge, I will let you know how I get on.

Dave I don't know about the BFGoodridge tyres but the cross climate ones I put on a previous CRV were quiet and felt like they were really gripping the road. Anyway you have probably bought your tyres by now!

Well I have now got a nice new set of Urban Terrains very please with them so far, there is some noise but nothing compared to the Tyre noise that I was getting, but I haven't tried them at high speed on a motorway yet and probably wont until next month.
The worst thing was I have spent time and money trying to get rid of what I thought was a mechanical problem and it was primarily Tyre's all along (although the wheel bearing was also making some noise before I changed it), I know somebody here suggested Tyre's a while ago but I didn't have another set to try and moving them around previously didn't give me any clues.
Oh well live and learn.
Dave
