Welcome to the club Carol. Is it clutch fluid or oil from the gearbox? Do you have or can get a photo of the general area? Others with experience of your model will be along later. In the meantime, is this a petrol or diesel RAV?

Hi , thanks for your replies,it is a 2002 diesel and definitely clutch fluid , was towed home by AA after clutch pedal went on the floor and had to lift with foot to try to pump it , AA said slave cylinder but on looking at it it is spurting from the aluminium unit above that feeds the slave.

Master cylinder? Does it have a plastic reservoir on top of the casting?

Master cylinder is fine, this is a small aluminum unit about 3 inches long sitting just above the slave cylinder feeding in and out of the slave by 2 small metal pipes.

Hi Carol , I'm sure this has come up recently and Uncle Bob or Anchorman will know the answer.. Is this some sort of damper unit to prevent the clutch being engaged too aggressively? It would help to protect the DMF as well. If I remember correctly, my Isuzu Trooper had one, though that was pre-DMFs. It was probably intended to give the gearbox some protection as it was a very torquey engine.

Thanks Chris , need to know the name of the unit to be able to sorce a replacement, anyone got the Rav4 manual? Hi Carol, in your position I would give our resident parts guru, Kingo a ring in the morning and explain the problem to him. I haven't got his telephone number handy but I'm sure that Ravasher has and will pass it on to you. He has a standing order with him for front bumper end mouldings. He was telling me on Friday that Kingo's standard greeting to him is now "Morning Ash, which side this time?" It seems that his RAV has a difficult relationship with his gatepost and Mrs Ash is only encouraging it ( the gatepost )!
I've PM'd Ash and asked him to pass on the relevant telephone number.
