Just popped out to shops and the 4.2 has started making a really weird noise from the engine area. It’s like a grinding noise like metal to metal but only when ticking over and driving upto 1500 revs then stops totally. Never heard this type of noise before and no warning lights on. Everything else seems fine. On Tickover it stops for a while then comes back again. I’m going to see if I can record it

Is it a Petrol or diesel Ash ? It’s petrol mate, neighbours had a quick look for me definitely not from the engine it sounds like the exhaust rubbing somewhere he said there’s nothing visible he could see. He used one of crutches to pry the exhaust down and the noise stopped. Will hopefully get it into a garage next week as I’ll be out of action from tomorrow

I'd a scraping noise and it was a loose exhaust against a driveshaft

We had a similar noise on our first Rav and turned out to be as David suggested the heat shield but that was really noisey as two screws had sheared. Then on the current Rav we had it again but as you say only at certain revs again it was one sheared screw on the heat shield that time. Got that one done free of charge at local Toyota dealer :TU:
