Maybe. It was 1978 I think!!! I wouldn't claim any expertise in the matter, but surely this was an early foray into the use of electronics on cars and we were on a fairly steep learning curve. Weren't we still in the Lucar connector era then? I thank goodness everytime I look at the sealed connectors on the RAV. I guess that a motor vehicle was also a good testbed for the ability of any component to withstand vibration. It was probably in the period before SHCM got to grips with the situation as well

Hi Anchorman - I've just found a copy of the very detailed "How To" that you did on this subject when you had a 4.3 ( and short trousers ). Should I post it on here? Has this ever been transferred here ... I've got to do the job on my 4.3

Eventually got around to doing this earlier in between rain showers, fairly straight forward, 2x bolts holding pipe to head, 2x bolts & 2x nuts holding pipe & EGR to manifold, had also to undo the rail behind 2x bolts to be able to lift the valve off the manifold, hardest job was to undo the electrical connection
Once it was off again straight forward to clean, there appears to be 3 ducts from the manifold chamber into or out of the manifold, centre one feeding No 2 & 3, one to left feeding No 1 & one to right feeding No4. The centre one was still open but the 2 side ones were blocked, I had to force my was through with a screwdriver & then wire coat hanger, just dry clogged 'soot'
Gave it a good clean & sprayed in carb cleaner, then looked at the valve itself, I removed the solenoid to ensure the valve was moving freely & cleaned it all up, only error was I didn't mark the body & the solenoid & it can go back in 3 positions, yep I got it one out even after trying to be very careful.
The only thing I didn't do extensively was clean the tube, I didn't really have anything suitable, what is needed to do it 100% would be some form of pipe, test tube cleaning brushes, but I sprayed cleaner in, then got a rag & fastened it onto the end of a wire & pulled it through a few times. But I'm hoping now that now it's clean it'll clear itself as well.
Took a couple more turns to start than normally & then when it did there was a cloud of crap out the back, took it out onto the country lane (private of course) & put it into 3rd & 4.5K up to 80 it cleared all the crap out.
Off up to the lakes next weekend hence why I wanted to get it done, we'll see if the economy returns.

Yep 8 bolts/nuts in total, as said hardest bit was getting the electrical connector off, don't like to use too much force in case you break it.

Done it a few times on my old 57 plate, but haven’t on the new 62 plate yet. Guess what I’ll be doing tomorrow then? I use an old vacuum cleaner to get the worst out the pot (saves the crud falling down into the pipes)

Would not disturb unless good reason to personally, as the redesigned wan was SUPPOSED to negate requirement for cleaning......?

Sort of presumed it was the same as it’s a 4.3 Without it in front of me, do they look the same or are they obviously different?

Dave......they are SO different from the previous wans that Don had to point it oot to me......lol.....!! Having used besta diesel since I took possessment in 2012, and run it with a Lindop Chip from virtually new, I feel no compulsion to disturb it. Looks like a deceased British Formula 1 Playboy driver of a job to dislodge it.......a right James Hunt.........lol.

It’s definitely the old valve but did Kev say you’ve got a 2012?
