Don't remember there being curtain/side airbags on a 4.2, other than that, feeding stuff down the door pillar (A post) when airbags are present is not a good idea.
USB plug/socket, so 99% of the time it will be 5V into the camera.
Probably nothing that special about the hardwire kit other than it being a 12V(ish) to 5V regulator. (Probably switching to minimise power dissipation and heating problems). I doubt it will have the vehicle elec transient protection capability typical of that in an ECU, though.
The kit might have one or two ferrites on the lead in an attempt to meet any EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) regs (emissions from switching regulator and/or camera).
If you use anything else, just make sure the 5V regulator (power supply) has enough current supply head room to meet the current consumption requirements of the camera. If you measure say 700mA with an ammeter, you should allow a fair bit more (maybe 1A or so), to help avoid problems.
(Although the supply input in the camera may have some relatively high value capacitors on the input, often with these kind of things there are "fast" peaks in current demand, that a ammeter will not show, hence the advice to allow some headroom).

There ARE Curtain Airbags on the facelifted RAV4.2 in fact, so for years 2003-2005 with the round fogs, like Widge has.
However, Toyota has been very nice for a change and when you take off the A Pillar Trim you see the Curtain Airbag going up the pillar, but there are some dividers in place and you can run cables on the other side of that divider nice and cleanly (and in fact you could tie-wrap the new cable to the existing cabling that runs down there). I used this route when I ran some CAT5 cable from the lower drivers kick panel to the area around the rear view mirror. You don't have to disturb the headlining either in case you were maybe wondering about that - you can just push the cable in the little gap between headlining and screen and it stays neatly out the way :TU:

After several road rage incidents near me recently, I want to fit a dash cam in my 4.3 But.. I want to run the wire down the nearside A pillar.
Is it possible ?, as I hate seeing wires everywhere.
I've no problem easing the trim away with a trim tool. But... that airbag 😣

Well , purchased a dash cam £55 inc m card.
I eased the nearside rubber door seal away with plastic tool. Just enough room to feed the micro usb plug & cord through behind airbag above roof liner and onto camera. Went down under dash ,then fished through to hole under heater controls for power. Done.

Did you disconnect the battery when you did, or just go for it?

Tbh.... I just gritted my teeth and went for it , very gently. Pulling down on the thick rubber door seal is the trick though. Once that's right out of the way ( even down to the base ) There's 10mm behind the curtain airbag once you've prized the A pillar trim away at the top , just enough for a mini usb plug. I managed to get the trim about 1" away from position... just enough. There's other things in there (wires etc but as long as I was behind that airbag I was happy) It's tight in the top windscreen corner ! But then plenty of room behind the rubber and under dash for a 3mm wire.

Sofar adalaide to darwin, tomorrow we fly to Perth for another 10 days. Sofar I am pleased withthe results for a cheap camera, I havent managed to review much of the result but I am happy with what I have seen. I am not using the highest resolution so I can get a fewdays on a 32gb sd card. Dave

Under the headlining leading edge at the windscreen, over to the NSF pillar, behind the door rubber, behind the dash, under the centre console to the armrest cubby, into the cubby via a rubber coin tray which the usb cable slides through and plugged into the 12V lighter socket that Saab has kindly provided inside the cubby. It means that there are no wires or plugs on the dash. Not terribly elegant but simple and invisible. Just need to get around to doing the same in the convertible.....

I am back from holiday, I have had a skim through some of the footage and generally I am quite pleased with the result, as a security aid no problem, but I was hoping to get some good bits of film from the footage that I have taken, and there are lots that I am very pleased with but some of it is very washed out if the sun was in the wrong position, but from the point of having an accident it would be plenty clear enough to provide a view of what happened.
