This week I have been mostly rejigging my home network so that I could extend it to provide Internet access in the [detached] garage.
A modern EV charger is supposed to be 'smart' and requires an Internet connection so that it can be controlled via an App. The Toyota Home Charge unit will connect via 4G (it comes with a 10 year data plan), WiFi or Ethernet - they also list Bluetooth but I'm not really sure how that is going to work. To date although I have been able to 'see' both a 4G signal and the home Wifi when in the garage neither work as a viable data connection.
So I now have:
The wireless bridge is supposed to work at a distance of up to 3km! It is working very well at a distance of closer to 10-20 metres ...
And in the process I've learned a bit about wireless bridges and how to wire-up RJ45 cables so I had only to pass the cable rather than the whole connector through the wall.
I submitted my order for the 'free' charger to Hive on 2/10 and followed up with the requested photographs of my electricity supply and installation site on 3/10 and they 'promised' to get back to me within two working days (so by last Monday, 7/10). I chased them up yesterday (11/10) to be told that they have the necessary photos and that they will be in touch in due course - without any indication of when that might be! I'd be more annoyed if that wasn't exactly what I have been expecting based on the experiences of others ...
Meanwhile the car that I ordered on Monday 30/9 arrived at the dealers on Wednesday 9/10 according to the My Toyota app - I have, of course, heard nothing from the dealer on that subject but suspect that I will some time next week ...

So I now have:
- Ethernet over Powerline within the house to a point on an external wall 'facing' the garage.
- A hole through the external wall so that I can take a Power over Ethernet (PoE) lead out to the master side of a wireless bridge targeting the garage, and
- the slave side of the wireless bridge mounted on the garage, again using a PoE lead through a hole in the garage wall to get the connection back inside.
- Ethernet over Powerline within the garage to a wireless access point providing both WiFi (for the car) and an Ethernet connect adjacent to where the EV charger is, hopefully, going to be.
