Hi all, (mk3 2007 T180) i have been having problems with coolant loss for a while now some weeks worse than others, two weeks before last weekend it seemed to not lose any then on Saturday did a long trip 60 miles plus on bypasses and faster A roads when i got home the header tank was dry no over heating or warning lights on and has been using water ever since. No signs of leaks either hot cold running or off is this possible head gasket?

Thanks for that mine has dubious service history and has done 137k so i doubt they would do it might be worth an ask at least

The thread Phillip linked you too is more than ten years old also. Who’d have thought that more than 10 years after that lot we’d still be seeing the same old problems … Just today there was a fella on the FB owners group with the very same issues . Thousands of cars had either rebuilt engines or replacement engines and they’re still failing…..

Thanks for that mine has dubious service history and has done 137k so i doubt they would do it might be worth an ask at least As Charlie says, you are way out of coverage of any form of warranty. My point in posting the link is to see whether that might be the problem that you are experiencing. As per the post, owners report: - Excessive oil consumption.
- Coolant Water being blown out of the expansion tank and the colour sometimes turning darker in colour.
- Excessive Fuel consumption.
- Blocked or heavily sooted EGR valves
- Cars going into limp mode or displaying fault codes relating to this engines issues.
The key symptoms to demonstrate the fault are: - Oil consumption worse than 0.5 litre per 621 miles (1,000 km)
- Overheating & Head Gasket failure due to carbon deposits on the pistons
So, is coolant being blown out through the expansion tank? Is your car using significant quantities of oil?

Thanks so i have cleaned the EGR valve and it has made a big difference to its running better ave MPG etc, the problem is coolant loss, no heavy oil consumption no oil in water or vice versa temp gauge moves to dead centre and stays there! No sign of water either hot or cold running or stopped I have a 12 mile commute and it will go from max to min in a day the roads are mostly A n B roads not stop start

There is only one reason for coolant to be exiting the header tank. This subject was at the top on here and the other forums every day. The amount of engines changed not only with the RAV4 but with other cars in Toyotas range was incredible. Worcester Toyota we’re doing 2 or 3 a week. The one thing I can’t remember was what would happen if the cars were to be driven if not sorted. Eventually I guess they would fail in some way but for now all you can do is keep topping up with coolant and keep the EGR clean. Unfortunately just changing the head gasket isn’t going to cure it.

Has the coolant system been pressure tested?

Has the coolant system been pressure tested? Hi Davrav, not as yet but should be being looked at on Monday (30th) chatting with a mechanic friend who is into diesel engines said from my described symptoms he would suspect a crack in the waterways somewhere allowing coolant into a cylinder/s it makes sense to me it follows my experience with it.

So as Phillip42h said just changing the gasket wont cure it i have decided if this is the case i will try steel seal yeah yeah i know but i cant afford a new engine so if it works hooray! If not ill scrap the car which i really dont want to do as i love it

I’ve seen people say “ il just get the head gasket changed “ … Sadly that’s not a permanent fix even though it’s expensive. If you read the guide that was written many years ago in detail you will see that in addition to replacing the engine a lot of other components like manifolds , Injectors etc we’re also changed. Toyota didn’t do that for nothing. 👍

Hi all, its been about a week since i put the steel seal in and touch wood i havent had to top up the coolant yet! Today i towed my caravan into Cornwall ( i live in Cornwall but up the north end !) Lots of uphill work and a bit of moving around when we arrived i will check levels tomorrow but fingys crossed i may have found a diamond product 😁😁
