While cleaning the back of my 2002 3 door I noticed 2 what look like reversing sensors. I had the car undersealed with dinitrol and the coverage comes up to the level of these sensors. I did get a reversing camera fitted, but don't ever remember having reversing sensors that beeped since I bought the car. So I'm wondering if the 2 sensor looking things are dummies; or knackered; or just full of dinitrol. Anyone recollect if the 2002 models had reversing sensors before I crawl upside down below the car to look for cables attached to these things. They're either side of the rear bumper. Would be useful if they did work as the rear camera is good but sun glare affects the picture (twice a year). And yes, I get my sight tested every year - got to for my truck licence.

The 3 door never had them fitted as standard (UK), Toyota done a dealer fit optional involving 4 sensors , one on each 1/4 bumper and the other two on the plastic panel below the spare wheel . You should be able to prise a sensor out with a couple of small screwdrivers , then see if it has wires attached to it . If yes the control box could be behind left or right inside panels .

Thanks Bob. Yep - it has the 2 sensor looking things on the bit below the spare wheel. Nothing on the quarter panels, but I suspect these have been replaced at some point in the past. I will try prising one of them out and see what appears, or not.

many thanks Bob. I carefully levered one of the rubber look-alike reversing sensors and all it is is a fancy rubber plug for what is a hole that must have been drilled at the factory I guess as the paintwork wasn't damaged.

Hi This is the back of a 2005 5 door, are the holes either side of the spare, like mine? If so maybe somebody replaced the plastic panel from a vehicle that did have reversing sensors.
If it has a towbar, it is very easy to damage the panel, as you cannot open the door with a trailer on

One plug rubber is to the left side of where yours is, and the other similar. The rear panel may well have been replaced as I bought the car with some dents at the front nearside.
