Hi all. RAV4.3 2012. Left hand side of cabin heating (air con) working okay right hand side just blowing cold air. Gels like electrical (thermostat?) issue maybe Any clues where to look please! NB it’s not on dual zone by mistake!

Had this previously with my 2008 4.3. Turned out to be a stuck flap in the heater unit. Cured [eventually] by the fitting of a complete new unit. Fortunately this was covered under extended warranty but took almost two months to sort out as the Toyota parts catalogue, or whatever, for the car was incorrect. Three attempts to obtain the correct unit before both service manager and myself came to the same conclusion and highlighted the error to Toyota UK. There is a 'self test' diagnosis procedure that you can try to focus in on what is actually wrong.
I quote Anchorman here 'cos I couldn't remember the details :
'If you want to check all the servos just press and hold the "auto" and "Recirc" buttons together and the heater will enter its self check mode. Press the auto button and the heater will test cycle through all its various settings. Press the auto button again and if there are any faults it will give you a 2 digit code. If there are, let me know and I will tell you what it means but I think you will find nothing. If nothing else you will have fun watching the heater doing all its checks!'

Maybe I need a car like that, sometimes I have a sweater and scarf on and feeling the cold, and jane is in a t-shirt asking if she can open the window becouse she is so hot.🥶🥵🤣

Error codes come back alternating 21 and 24. Have also noticed passenger footwell is damp. This coincides with losing water in cooling system!

Got oil in the radiator expansion now. Still running okay but spewing out oily water out the overflow bit all the time! Funny enough doesn’t seem to be losing much oil?!!

I tiny drop of oil in water looks a lot. Unfortunately the mix of both exiting the expansion tank is not good news. There was another late Mk3 owner just yesterday on a Facebook page complaining of coolant exiting the pipe on the expansion tank…

I’m afraid I’m bailing on it. Don’t want to fix it as it’s already 125000 and I could do with something a little bigger anyway. I’m leaving Toyota land and going back to Volvo (had three Volvos but not had one for 20 years) XC60 bought yesterday!

A Mk3 spitting coolant is a bad prospect. I keep looking at the Volvo V90 estate car in AWD version. Like all cars minor issues but on the whole bloody good cars. Come back and tell us about it you don’t have to own a RAV4 to be a member here 👍👍👍 Im very interested to hear your opinions on your Volvo. V90 is currently on the shortlist for us. ..

It’s not unheard of for the heater servos to go and it’s a big expensive job. If you got to Toyota and watch them, they start with a heater and build a car round it.
