Kia Sportage ? You get a newer and lower mileage per £ than say a Toyota but they’re very good cars.

Mates son has one. He’s on his third or forth and has the latest sporty one. Front doors are huge not unlike the 4.4 Rav which are bigger than the 4.3… Seats are big and comfy and I expect they have height adjustment. Don’t know much about the engines but I think they’re smaller than the Rav, Nicely screwed together cars and there are lots for sale due I think to the popularity of the cars. 👍👍

Thanks Bob. I bought a Previa new in 1994 - sadly sold it when the rear diif was failing. That was the old first version petrol with the engine under the front deats - a great car. I bought a 1997 model and ran it for a year or two but that succumbed to its age. this one is interesting and probably worth a look. The series 1 suffered from overheating and rust in the rear subframe area - this one might be ok. I haven't look much at ebay yet.
This one being in Birmingham isn't too far away.

Looks good - The blurb says a Cat N car - so I'll try contacting the seller for more info.
The 4.3 cabin is a bit bigger than the 4.2; but of course more space in the 5 door v the 3 door !

There’s a huge amount of CatN cars out there now. Insurance companies are writing off cars for next to nothing. I would buy a CatN car but only if it was a throw away price like a couple of grand. Thing is most sellers think a repaired car that’s on the register is worth the same or nearly as much as an HPI clear car which frankly is just absurd. No way in this world would I buy a CatS. No matter how much crap the sellers give and boy do they give some.

Update - visited 2 garages in Edinburgh yesterday while I was in town. requirement to the car salesmen... petrol automatic; and the drivers door etc in a design easy enough for me to get in and out without crawling on the floor. No budget mentioned. Cars seen/tried - Audi Q3 couldn't bend to get my head in Hyundai Tucson - easier to get in...just a tad tight as my head brushed the opening. Nice car, but unsure. Chap told me the Sportage is the same size. I'll check the Sportage elsewhere. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - a 2019 car - perfect fit and roomy inside. petrol auto with the battery. Chap said I could expect 70mpg. However looking at the Mitz forum, the battery gets you 38 miles then its petrol works to charge and shift the car...After 2018 is a 2.4L engine deemed to be better. Price 20 grand. Smile sweetly! At the same garage, a Santa Fe - jeez...what a beast. the gaffer saw it from 100 hyeards away and said forget it...too big.
Next garage - tried another PHEV - higher spec @ £27,000 in a dark grey. Felt like sitting in a cave. pointed to the Outlander in total Traffic police spec - not for sale. Dacia only now bringing out a petrol auto model...none to be seen.
saw a Volvo XC90 Hybrid at the next grage - they were just closing. It's massive!! So's the price. lottery winner money. No thanks. Had an XC60 - couldn't ry it but will look around.
Hoping to check some more out tomorrow - Hondas; the XC60, and maybe a visit to the Toyota garage.
Then will look closely at some of the suggestions you've sent me on RAVs...gob-smacked seeing a 1994 Previa for sale, although there was mention of slight corrosion...the Previa was a great drive but the back end rotted.

The used car market has gone nuts since the microchip/Covid issues that knackered new car supply chains. My daughter used to have a Q3: bloody awful car, terribly cramped inside and so dark - like sitting in a coal shed. She’s got a Q2 now; another shitty Audi but like a smaller coal shed. Why do Audi try to make the interiors of their cars so uninviting? Hope you have better luck this week, Ian.👍

Had a drive in a pals Outlander PHEV. Nice car and fairly quick. On thinking about driving to south of France, out in the sticks and off the beaten track so to speak, I wonder about the wisdom of running around in a car driven by electric motors via either a battery of battery charged by the petrol engine. A local garage here won't touch cars with batteries that have electrical problems. They'll do the mechanical side ok. So if thats the same in garlic munching France, then I might be better with a simple petrol auto. I can't fly then hire a car unless I hire a car I can get into...so might as well buy one. Looking at Outlander prices, the straight petrol auto is the same price as the PHEV used. Blimey. Then going back to petrol RAVs...haha - a 2008 for sale £1545 !! MOT says the seat belt mounting is coming away from inner sill...so thats £3000+ to fix lol. Looking thru various sites for a 2009-2011 petrol auto Rav and very few available. Guess people holding onto them.

Don't forget that the Outlander PHEV will happily run on petrol only. When they first came on the market a lot of company car drivers chopped in their X5s and saved 5K/yr on benefit in kind tax and never bothered much about charging them up.

I didn'trealise but the petrol engine runs to generate electricity cos the transmission is done by electric motors.
Not sure if the non PHEV petrol has the good old ancient transmission style with whirly tubes lol.
Saw one for sale in Dundee..a Scottish regy too and so checking MOT, rusty brake pipes to the rear covered in slime; which probably means the back end will be corroding away too.
Looked at several cars for sale...some were good prices then saw they were Cat S or CatD...odd cos they were all around London.
