Hello bothwellbuyer. I have a 2L petrol from 2009 on 110k and so far no issues at all with the engine. We go on holiday four up and dog, with a wheelchair and a couple of other aids and usual holiday cases all packed in. A roofbox takes the overflow and doesn't dent the mpg too much (33). I did look at replacing it recently but can't find anything that gives me so much confidence. First bit of work was needed this year - both lower arm front bushes. Otherwise all original. I'm 6'2" and have a good couple of inches to spare even with the seat at full height.

Just occurred to me: Hyundai Santa Fe. A neighbour has an ‘08 reg from new. Pulls his rather enormous caravan with it. Has never had any trouble with it and it must have stellar miles on it now. Also Kia Sorento has a good rep. Found one Kia Sorrento in Warwick - £2500. 2003 model low mileage. Checked reviews and they suffer from excessive rust on a rear bar, and funnily enough, the car failed its MOT 2 weeks ago for the very same serious rust. Will check out Ravs and the santa Fe. Also interested in the Volvo XC60 or 70.

We word of warning on used car sales on Facebook. I looked at 2 Volvos. One a XC70 2014 for £3200. I emailed them and got asked for my address....reckon its a scam where you pay the shipping (from cardiff docks) and car never to be seen again. I reported it to FB - I found the car was for sale in a local Arnies for £16,995 and sold recently. The pics on facebook were the photos from A Clarks website!! Found another Volvo in Bradford....too cheap so reported that as well. The 1st car in supposed Cardiff docks was to be transported by a company owned by a Romanian.

Mine has the same amount of hinges as your one 😉 haha - my 3 door is noticeable lacking in hinges, but now I'm wearing a knee brace with 2 hinges, I am becoming accustomed to maintaining hinges almost daily. A 5 door thus poses no hurdle any longer!

Did look up two of the 5 door 4.2’s on Auto trader but both mentions corrosion on the mot’s ☹️☹️ Question….. is any car you buy just for the trip to France..then sell it when you come back ?…..in which case the corrosion is not an issue if it has a long mot 👍🏻

I now check the MOT history on every car I find advertised and considering. Found one Honda with front frame rust mentioned 3 years ago. The RAVs - any surface rust mentioned at the rear is a no-no. If its mentioned on the MOT, its worse than just surface in my experience of them.

From an a mot testers prospective…. Corrosion would be noted during the test to cover yourself that you’ve spotted it, but not at the time bad enough to fail. Kev has proven that even a well cared for 4.3 in a salty location, can just rot away the sills and floor ☹️☹️

Very reliable with good longevity and seven seats where rear five can be easily removed [though they are heavy] Friend has a petrol version that has been going for years. Son has diesel that also just keeps going. He's converted his into a compact camper.
