Concerning the 2006 RAV4 - I know the intermediate steering shaft is causing a clunk. A common problem, and a fairly easy job to repalce the shaft.
However, I feel the steering wheel when turned is a 'bit notchy' when driving along and turning the wheel even slightly. Now, I can assume it might be the splines worn on the shaft or lack of lubrication causing the notchiness (is that a new word?), but could it be anything else? I really don't want to start replacing the steering rack. The car passed the MOT - so there is no actual play in the steering or any other worn parts. I wondered about things like the top turret suspension joint/bearing maybe sticking.
Steering fluid is ok and no leaks found on the MOT.
Anyone experienced anything similar to their RAV?

Take the shaft off and make sure the UJ’s are free to swivel in both planes. If one is seizing up it will be stiff/easy as you turn it.

Very helpful, but as my mobility is restricted, have decided to get the garage to replace it. I've ordered a new shaft via PartsKing (price now £195 incl clip and delivery). Yes - will get the UJ checked as the steering is notchy...ie the wheel doesn't turn smoothly, but is sticky. We'll not know until the shaft is removed then the UJ can be checked. Cost of a new UJ ? About £235 ! Wonder if we can replace steering UJ with a propshaft one haha.
I'm hoping it's just the shaft corroded and stiff.
(Oh, and have also been watching some of those videos you have on thetrain line routes, Don. Extremely interesting!)

Then there seems to be 2 shafts, so I'm going with the one that Ancs shows.

Glad to report what you are experiencing is new, Ian……the steering intermittently had that annoying wee clunk, but not what you describe.

We'll change the shaft and see. The clunking is more prevalent, and would put a buyer off if it comes to that. I just need to chase the clown that didn't pay for my fire engine - still owing almost 3 grand.

I checked tyre pressures shortly after stealing the car...pressure meant to be 32 psi. Actuals were 31 19 22 12
I accepted the previous owner must be lexicdys, or perhaps had mistook the airline for the waterline. No matter. No harm came to any crossing pedestrians.

Noo……that IS strange……as you remember, one valve was pucked, so I could only check the urra three. None but NONE was as low as 12, they were all in excess of 28, the correct pressure for 17” tyres……..32 is for 18” iirc.

Alloys are notorious for corrosion on the rim allowing air escape. Would've checked today again but bucketing down. Car off to painters for door strip
