Pictures of a fuel filler pipe from a low mileage 2006 petrol RAV4
Sadly the design fault that started in 1994 still exists 12 years later !
The lower end of the pipe has become porous, allowing petrol seepage

I reckon it’s the luck of the draw with these pipes. None of our RAVs had corroded pipes (or anything else for that matter 😊) and I always checked. I guess it has a lot to do with where they’ve spent their life - the coastal ones are likely candidates and I’ve seen a few on AT which the MoT histories said to give a very wide berth to.

But its perhaps common enough that Toyota now sell a protected for corrosion pipe. What surprised me was a car was so little miles (60,000) had so much corrosion. I posted it in the hope that folk here check that pipe if one smells a whiff of petrol !

So, it lasted 9 years from new. It was replaced with one of the modified ones, which still looks fine. I've not looked it up, but mine would have done 60 - 70,000 at the time of failure.

Just hope the basket that sold you it was unaware of this fault…! Most Rav people are honest though.

No big worries as I've posted it back to the seller, for their perusal, using the DHL pay on delivery service. A bit expensive but I'm sure they won't mind.....and I hope they can use the breeze blocks I added as packing to ensure the item isnae damaged.
