After nearly 20 years of mostly faultless service our dearly beloved 4.2 auto is having a blip. It's getting warm now here in Spain so yesterday, true to form the A/C started playing up. This is an intermittent fault, the worst, and when working, all lights (A/C) and the fan motor will run on any setting. then the A/C light will go out the A/C stops and the fan stops as well. A short time later it all starts up again but the off period is becoming longer. Any thoughts on this one before we throw it at the garage for repair?
Next, again yesterday, the ABS light, and the pads light also came on and stayed on. We have our MOT equivalent here next month, and this will be a failure so hoping that it will only be a set of replacement pads. Sadly our local man is not available for a week and he is Mr fix-it so I need some advice? The car appears to be driving and braking normally.

No real common reason for either. The AC might need gassing, if it gets low it will play some funny tricks. The ABS light, there is no pad wear indicator but there is low fluid so check that. After that it really is an ABS fault. The sensors and the rings can play up with age so a look around might show it.

As Don says, the AC may just need re-gassing, though I would imagine that a loss of refrigerant would likely result in a progressive reduction in cooling effectiveness ... Another possibility is a failure of the clutch in the aircon pump. That would be more likely to exhibit the "now you see it, now you don't" type of behaviour. As I understand, A main dealer would be most likely to replace to whole aircon unit; an aircon specialist would be more likely to simply replace the failed part. Any 'advice' given on an entirely academic basis as I have no practical experience of these things at all!

If it was just low on refrigerant, wouldn't the fan keep working though ?

It's a strange one. There is no time similarity and when it is working the air is cold. The system has never been re-gassed which must be some sort of record so that could be an answer but as you say, why should the fan stop? We are having a few days away next week in the van so have arranged for the local garage to have a look. At 28€ an hour, not too expensive.

The ABS reluctor rings can wear away with corrosion on the hubs, they are on the driveshafts inline with the ABS sensors .

Yesterday the lights were off for about 20km till they came on again, and the same with the A/C! Still, visit to the car doc today and leaving it with them for four days.

I would of said no..completely separate issues. Well unless you have corrosion in the fuse box ☹️

Still, visit to the car doc today and leaving it with them for four days. I would of said no..completely separate issues. Well unless you have corrosion in the fuse box ☹️ Update! We picked the car up, now warning light free and A/C working well. Seems you were right Bob as the problem was partly in the fuse box in the engine and the A/C gas was topped up. "Jose" warns that the main box on the left side of the engine may well start to give more problems but a run to the airport has been fine, so fingers crossed for the future. Headlights polished, 4 hours labour and the bill €117 which can't be bad.
