In t'other thread, I posted a link to a 4.2 auto I was considering purchaising. Its a 2004 model in London ( N11 ) Thats a short flight or long drive from sunny Glasgow, and a bit of a gamble.
At a price of £2490, I can't expect much more than it starts/runs. If it was able to run to Glasgow, that would be useful.
My nigling worry is that it might be a rust bucket or have more than a high mileage and corroded alloys tho. So should I ask around to get someone to look at said car first?
Or just take the chance?

Possibly the AA? Although our only experience in doing that was a disaster, but i think that was due to the mechanic, the report that we received was mixed up with a report for another car (typical cut and paste errors) after speaking to him on the phone i got the impression that he was having some sort of breakdown he was almost in tears on the phone apologising, we did get a report and the AA also refunded our money, but still ended up spending nearly a grand getting the brakes good enough to go through a ct (french mot).

Good idea to get it looked at, Ian. Maybe one of the folks on here might be close enough to eyeball it? I’d happily look at it but I’m a bit remote in Cheshire.😊

Where's Big Kev when ye need him ?
Mind you, with cheap flights to London, it might just be feasible to do a couple of days break!

DriveAway Deals Ltd
"Yes it’s still available. We are open 7 days a week from 11am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sunday should you wish to view and test drive. Our post code is N11 2EU. We are 2 minutes walk from Bounds Green underground station. www.driveawaydealsltd.co.Uk02088813252 " is the info from their email.
I suppose things I'm interested in would be corrosion up the back end area, and around the wheel arches (altho it looks ok on the pics) I'll try emailing them to ask for pics of the underside. Even a quick impression would help me. Thank you. If you ever want to drive a green goddess, its here as long as I have it...unless you'd like to buy it (discounted price for friends!).

well, Mb2t is a star!! Not only did he go out to check the car on my behalf, but his wife went along as camera support! Many thanks.
Turned out the car wasn't too bad - new alloys required...but inspection of the steelwork behind the rear bumper showed up a fair bit of rot. The underneath area had surface rust which is expected of a car that age and mileage, but the rear body panel and inner panel were on their way to leaving the car. A very rust rotten seam between the 2 panels would mean that both panels need removed and new ones welded in.
I've messaged one body panel supplier to see if they are available and cost; then add in welders time; then the new alloys. Hmmm- is there a London market for small cars that will run for a year then be scrapped I wonder? It states its ULEZ compliant - new cat and rear exhaust pipe had been fitted. But I don't think the numbers add up- £500 ish for the rear panels refurb £200 for underbody rustproof and treatment £800+ for new alloys (and tyres if I went for 18": Engine and transmission seemed ok so - buying price circa £1500, but need to think of carriage to Glasgow.
Was a bit surprised the car passed the MOT with the rear panels so rusty tbh, but perhaops they are not strictly structural?

Not a problem, happy to help. We were on the way to B&Q to buy some material to the van, so went together, she was also happy to help. Having looked at cars, at least this one, beside the rear beam was close to the description - i have seem much worst described as mint. What ever you decide - good luck!

3 door NRG HERE for sale at a good price Bothy. Needs a bit of research. According to the seller it has 101K kilometres recorded which is a little over 60K miles but MoT history records last odo at 91351. Also it’s a 52 reg but DVLA says it was first registered in May 2004 which would make it 04, an import maybe? Looks a bit scruffy but no mention of structural corrosion in MoT history.

Also if it was an NRG it would have flared wheel arches, so something very wrong 🤔 so skinny arch yet had a 2.0 and an automatic ..suspect import .
