Hi guys,
I'm pleased to have found this UK based forum. We've owned a mk2 Rav D4D for many years and it's really a great car IMHO. The car is used by myself and my mum when she visits me in Ibiza (about 6 months of the year). A while ago the clutch went and I had it replaced. Then only a year and a half later it went again! Mileage was not more than around 10k in that period. My mechanic friend told me this was most likely due to mum's driving style, she is 78 and not the best with the manual transmission. I've since told her not to rest her foot on the clutch pedal, she claims she never did and observing her she doesn't seem to do that now but might have before. My Q to you guys is, could the clutch have been faulty? Or was it most likely her not so great driving that caused it?! So now I'm actually thinking of buying her an automatic mk2, but here in Spain there are very few 3 door automatics and the second hand car market is a bit of a minefield. Low mileage models or ones with FSH almost impossible to find. And on top of that I've discovered that the 2001-03 automatics often have trouble with the ECM. So the second point I need advice on is should I get her an automatic or just let her keep driving ours?! It's on 200k miles now so I feel like it needs as much love and attention when driving as possible! Thanks in advance for any advice.. All the best, James.

Hi James, was the dual mass flywheel replaced with the clutch and is it that which has failed?

Clutch should last one heck of a lot longer but can also last no time at all depending on driving style. A brand new clutch can be faulty and we once had a Peugeot 307 that had 3 clutches before it was spot on. If a clutch was going to fail due it being faulty it would most likely have shown it’s problems within a couple of thousand miles. If it’s slipping it’s the driven plate or perhaps the flywheel .. Most likely the plate.
3Door cars are prohibitively expensive in my opinion or the automatic ones are anyway. Those who own them and love them will say differently and they may be right but there are other cars out these for less money. That said it’s the buyers money and decision so nowt to do with me.
Your correct there are a couple of issues relating to the auto box but I don’t think it’s common and anyway all cars have potential problems.

Just a couple of comments, the 5 door rav is still not a big car, if autos are easier to find in a 5 door, also if you want to fit cruse control, you need a later mk 2 rav with round fog lights on the front.

To avoid the autobox ECU fault you need to source a 4.2.5 from 2003. These have round front fogs, as Dave said, the front indicators incorporated in the top rear of the headlight assembly, audio controls on the steering wheel and a rounder silver appliqué around the stereo. Bear in mind that the early 4.2 autobox troubles can be repaired by reflashing the g/b ECU. In the UK and US there are several firms who do the repairs on a return mail-order basis for about 350GBP.

Thanks for the replies and advice guys.. Three5, yes the dual fly wheel was replaced not sure exactly which part of the clutch went just that it needed to be replaced. charliefarlie, thanks for the clutch info and i agree there are plenty of good options out there it's just convincing my mum that is another story! I've been trying to convince her that a Nissan Juke would be a good car for her but i've not had too much joy there! And in a way I'd quite like to have another Rav in the garage firemac, the 4.2.5 is the one we have and i've read up on the forums about reflashing the ECU and this doesn't bother me. What concerns me more is buying a car where the previous owner didn't do this right away and caused permanent damage to the auto transmission which is what I understand will happen if you drive the car without getting it fixed promptly.
jasehutch thank you

jasehutch thank you You’re absolutely right about how easily the box can be damaged if it’s continued to be used once the ECU failure symptoms appear. My understanding is that the box will destroy itself very quickly if it’s run for any length of time. Once that occurs the only solution is s new box (along with a new or reflashed ECU) and the cost of that is several thousands GBP from Toyota.
