The power steering on the RAV failed about 10 days ago and the car was left for repair in a local garage here in Spain. A new rack and power steering pump was fitted, but they have not been able to get the system to work. When the car is revved and the steering operated the fluid just spits back into the master cylinder. The rack has been back for testing and no fault found so the garage is at a total loss to find a result. Any thoughts that I could pass on would be REALLY welcome. We have a hire car at the moment, costing a lot so need to get the beast repaired!! 250000kms now, so is it time to change the car?!!!

Do the systems have to be bled properly ? But surely any competent garage would know and have done that ? Im a bit curious to know why the garage doesn't know whats wrong ?

You and me both Charlie? To me it seems that the fluid is just not getting to the rack from the pump. I mentioned bleeding to them but that fell on deaf Spanish ears!

Odd that both power steering rack and pump needed to be replaced at the same time, to my mind it would have been one or the other part. do they still have the old power steering pump available…..suggest they fit it back on in case the new pump is faulty.

Bob, when the pump was replaced, the new one came with a different pulley to the original, and the pulleys had to be changed. Could be that the pump is not the right one for the car? The original symptoms were a slow loss of fluid which I topped up and all was well, then a faster drop followed by a loss of power steering. It's really heavy to drive without the power!

I was thinking that power steering pumps have a pressure relief valve inside, and could spit the fluid back into the reservoir at high RPM. ….or the pressure relief valve is faulty on the new pump .

It’s a long time since I played with power steering but if the pump is working then it’s a case of burping the system. I said bread above but that’s not really correct. Once the reservoir is filled it’s a case of turning the wheel lock to lock which usually purges the air out of the system. It exits through the reservoir.. If your mechanics can’t sort that I think you need new mechanics.

Just as a finale to this one, We eventually got it back and now all well but with the new rack and multiple removals and replacements the final bill was as quoted which was not too bad. It has worked as expected since.
