Hi All, I'm fairly certain that the contacts between the removable screen and the headunit in the RAV are not making reliable connections at the moment. I invariably leave the screen in place ( it's a Kenwood DNS8160DBS ) and a couple of years ago encountered a problem where the headunit re-booted when I went over any substantial bump in the road. My initial diagnosis was that there was a loose power(?) connection under the dashboard, so I removed the unit and checked them all. When the problem persisted I took the screen off and scrubbed the contacts with alcohol on a cotton wool bud which seemed to cure the problem. My question is: Is there something better than alcohol to clean the contacts with and ideally, prevent further oxidation or whatever is causing the problem? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Gold should not oxidise Chris. It may have been worn through the plating though. How secure/snug is the fit?

Gold should not oxidise Chris. It may have been worn through the plating though. How secure/snug is the fit? Very good question David. I have been wondering if some relative movement between the screen and the headunit could have caused a problem with the plating. I have a soft fibreglass pencil that in the dim and distant past I've used to clean contacts on instruments, but I'm loath to attack the gold plating with it. I was hoping that someone might know of some fluid that would clean and maybe lubricate the contacts when applied with a cotton wool bud. The connection between the screen and headunit seems fairly secure, but I've never liked removable screens because of the need for a secure connection that can be made and broken hundreds/thousands of times in its life. It just seems mechanically wrong somehow, though I do accept that far brighter people than I designed them.

Alcohol based cleaner is the best solution. It does not leave any residue.

Wouldn’t electrical contact cleaner wok?🤔

IPA (not beer). Although there was a bit of an unfounded downer on it a few years ago at work, it's generally OK.
As above though, gold plated for a reason.
I suppose you also have to consider the unwanted possibility of whether a connector solder joint or any associated flexi-ribbon (Head units often have these internally, many other ECU would avoid them like the plague) has gone intermittent inside the display. I'm of course not familiar with the construction details (can't find a service manual), but hopefully there is sufficient stress relief on the connector to protect anything internal. Plus, if you're leaving it in place most of the time, you'd hope exposure to such forces is reduced.
Any "springy-ness" in either of the mating half "pins" that's maybe reduced (same question as David really)?
