Hi all hope all are well. Mrs P has now changed jobs and doesn't need the Rav for work any more so it is stood on the driveway all week until the weekend, and last weekend it just about started when we went out in it. So what is best to do in this situation to keep the battery and everything else in good nik, is it worth going out and starting it up every day to turn the engine over or does this take more drain out the battery? We don't keep it in the garage any more either so is stood outside on the front drive.

I’ve not used mine much but I have the bigger diesel battery fitted, I can get away with not using for a month before I have to put the smart charger on it . I also have a Bluetooth 12v meter attached to the battery, so i can quickly check its condition. Battery… Charger….. Phone app…… So maybe upgrade the battery first but you will need to keep it topped up by using it once a month, or get a charger .

Starting every day isn’t a good idea. … It will flatten the battery and can cause condensation in the engine. A better monitor/charger is worth fitting though I’m not in favour of leaving them hooked up all the time,

A solar charger might work well ... ?

The little Mazda sits outside for long periods, under a cover with a CTEK charger (as above) connected. Oh and in gear with the handbrake off.
I was advised not to start it - condesation can form, not good for the exhaust??
I park the car on rubber mats to prevent the tyres from flat-spotting, probably not an issue for you if your moving it most weekends.
Strangely, decided this morning I was bringing it to work for a run, probably go the long way home - haven't used it for about 3 weeks - all was well :driving:

Thanks for the replies folks much appreciated :TU: So starting up not a good idea as i suspected so i won't do that but will get the bigger battery as suggested by Bob :TU: We changed the battery last year for a Toyota one but is the smaller one even though they said it was an heavy duty battery, but a couple of slight frosts last week and the Rav not been used for eight days it just about fired up so with heavier frosts and colder days on the horizon i doubt it would start? Is THIS the correct battery Bob?

I put a Yussa 3031 in mine, I think from bobs recommendation, I got a bit confused with the battery mounts as they fix onto a different place becouse of the wider battery.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the battery but would have thought it would hold the charge better than it does, but we are over by the Toyota dealer on Saturday so will pop in and see what they say :TU:

I would suggest getting someone like the AA or Toyota to check that the alternator and voltage regulator are working properly because unless you were sold a duff battery it should still be OK after a year even if the car is only used sporadically.

We will get it checked out Saturday David if they can see us but up until the lack of use the battery has been fine starting straight away :TU:

Yes …..thats the Yuasa I have on mine YBX3031 👍🏻👍🏻 OK cheers Bob Do the straps need moving or something as Widge suggested? Removing straps eliminates sacrificial drain which is something taking a very small amount of power like for instance the alarm…… But this shouldn’t really be a problem if a big battery is fitted. Re you existing battery . If Toyota fitted it and it’s not up to the job tell them. Although your use of the car has changed the battery should still be up to the job….. If you don’t ask you won’t get. Checking the voltage output is easy even for a thickie like me. A simple basic multi meter is all you need. Set it to read the voltage and put the red probe to positive and the black to negative. Your looking for a number well over 13 volts…. If you have that all is well. Though it’s reasonable to assume all is well as it’s change of use that’s affecting the battery. 👍👍
