I received an email this afternoon to inform me "that the availability and support of Toyota Touch&Go Toolbox application will be terminated by the end of 2020" which doesn't bother me particularly since it is a pretty poor application and, with a 4.5, I no longer need it anyway. So I'm OK ... ... But anyone with a 4.4 or other Toyota with the original Touch&Go system will no longer be able to update their maps without taking their car to the dealer ... - No further map updates will be available for purchase in Toyota Touch&Go Toolbox and the application won’t operate anymore after 31st December 2020.
- Toyota highly recommend updating the map on your navigation device as soon as you have the opportunity using Toyota Touch&Go Toolbox application.
All in all not too great in terms of long term customer support.

This is the actual wording of the email:
Dear Toyota Touch&Go Toolbox User,
We toned to inform you that the availability and support of Toyota Touch&Go Toolbox application will be terminated by the end of 2020.
We highly recommend updating the map on your navigation device as soon as you have the opportunity using Toyota Touch&Go Toolbox application.
No further map updates will be available for purchase in Toyota Touch&Go Toolbox and the application won’t operate anymore after 31st December 2020.
If you wish to update your map after this date, you can do it at your dealer. For further information, please contact your dealership or go to Toyota Customer Portal.
We thank you for your trust using our services in all these years and wish you the most beautiful routes.
Best regards,
Toyota Touch&Go Toolbox Support
Usually, OEM hardware is supported for a minimum of 10 years after end of production. T&G (first generation) was fitted at least to 2012 4.3.
I would wager, based on:
1.vehicle ages 2.the relatively high cost of map updates 3.maintaining support for use on later windows versions and 4.the slightly less friendly update method compared with later units
that the toolbox and server is not getting much use and not worth supporting any longer. Plus, they can still claim support is available through the dealer, if you want it.
Frankly, I'm not that surprised.

It worked OK for me, but you had to have a fair degree of patience with it.

My maps were updated for free (under extended warranty) a few weeks ago, when i had the issue with the touch screen. I never used the app though.

Wasn't the same system still being fitted to 2018 RAV 4.4s? So ten years of support should run to 2028 rather than 2020? So making it a dealer only option (at dealer set pricing) seems a little harsh on 4.4 owners ... As Ken says, the toolbox was pish, and as you said "it worked", and the maps were very expensive anyway, so I'm not that surprised that is little used and has been withdrawn ... but still not too great in terms of long term customer support.

Touch 2 (with Go) (plus) is the second generation. That updates by purchasing via "My Toyota" and a straightforward download link, which is forwarded after purchase. Touch (and go) (plus) updates only, are purchased and installed via the toolbox. Touch 2 superseded Touch around 2013/2014(ish). I think the majority of the "problems" with the toolbox were: 1. The speed of some people's internet connection (time to download approx 7 to 8 GBytes of data)
2. The speed of writing that data to a USB mem stick (I've tended to use a USB3 stick with a good write speed. While the head unit is only USB2 for the update, at least a USB3 stick in a USB3 port on the PC, can be considerably faster getting the update onto the stick in the first place. It also doesn't help that some of the update includes a fair few smaller files, i.e. not a bulk transfer, which also slows things down further).

I had a 2013 4.4 which needed updates via the tool box. And, yes, over a 1Mbps connection downloads took a little while ...

Never heard of this toolbox thing. If it’s purely about updating maps which I thought was a dealer only option then it won’t be missed. Standard navigation unit or module is that pish poor it’s hardly worth updating. 100 quid Garmin is much better .
