Has anyone got any tip / advice on changing the fuel tank on D4d manual diesel 2007
We have a leak in the fuel tank and on closer inspection there is a lot of corrosion so looks like new tank if needed.
We have access to my fathers ramp and are going to have a go at changing it ourselves, before we order a new any advice? Also best place to get one?
Thanks in advance
My own experience of this problem:
I got a fuel leak evidenced by a small patch on the drive. Took it to a local Toyota indy and he said "bet it's not the tank". He was right, it turned out to be the filler pipe which is a bit of a weak design point on our model as it gets packed with mud inside it's shield. The tank was full so to avoid draining it he jacked the nearside of the car to an alarming angle and replaced the pipe hardly spilling a drop in the process. Took him an hour and a half. The new pipe was much better protected during manufacturing by Toyota, which was a relief to me!
I’ve changed several filler pipes but no tanks. The pipe goes through a concertina plastic sleeve which holds the moisture and corrodes. Check that first. It’s doable without removing the tank but let it run low and then Jack the vehicle right up on the filler side to tilt the fuel away. Don’t but a copy pipe, they are a nightmare despite being cheap.
Now if it is the tank and it’s an AWD P, the prop shaft needs to come off and you’ll need a filler pipe anyway because it won’t stand the mauling.
Hoovie: ignore this section - it will disappear shortly
