Looking at 3 door RAVs - invariably the 4.2 I seem to remember a sticky somewhere the ancs (think) had done. What is the NRG and what is the NV versions?
I know the 4.1 had the diff lock - but am I right in saying this was not taken into later versions?
Of course, I'm used to 4 wheel drive with the green goddess and the Volvo XC90 although the latter isn't that impressive.

The NRG is the name of the sporty 3 door Rav4 pre-facelift (2001-2003) sold in auto and manual and as you say manual no longer gets a dif lock button.5 door came as GX and VX. The base model in the 2001-2003 was an NV, In its most basic form it was a 1.8 FWD model, if it has a 2.0 engine then it will be a 4x4. RAV4 NV in 2.0 has a fair spec inside but outside has grey plastic bumpers and no wheel arch flairs. Facelift model 2003-2005 model line up XT-2, XT-3 and XT-R👍🏻

Smashing - thanks Bob. I had it in my mind that NRG was 2 wheel drive! Then wondered why so many were on sale on ebay. Don't think I can swing a £5k purchase of an auto 4.2 but something like that above looks a clean motor....and without the dreaded wheel arch extensions which guarantee enhanced metal rot.

Umm, I've had five 4.2s and rust was never a problem on any of them, anywhere. They all had the plastic wheelarch extensions, too. :TU:

As Jim’s says rust is not an issue on the mk2 models ....yes it’s age related but I’ve not seen a rusty one yet . well unless you buy one that’s lived north of the border it’s whole life 😳😳

I'd picked up a 4.2 a handful of years ago to use as a donor car which had a seized engine...and I think it may have been the 1.8.
Its the 4 wheel drive I'd prefer due in part to the state of the roads here. The rust on the 4.1s I had was on the rear areas where the subframe mounting is. Oh, and the wheel arches due to the extensions holding muck and the fixing holes not treated properly. Good to read the 4.2 was a bit more sturdy.

It’s come back to me now, this car has been sold and relisted or new set of photos ..it had a dent in the middle of the bonnet, just in line with that crease in the middle of front bumper 🤔 also see the gap in the n/s wing and bonnet 😳
