We bought a 2006 T180 - D-CAT. Last autumn, 80,000 miles on the clock. In march the car developed a fault and was diagnosed with leaking head gasket. The garage I bought it from had it repaired as it was under a warranty. Due to lock-down the garage couldn't finish the repair until this week. We collected the car and I followed my wife home. I noticed that occasionally the car emitted quite a bit of white smoke or steam. Especially under acceleration. Today I followed her again and the car seems a lot better but occasional spat out white smoke and possibly some water spray when under hard acceleration.
I have checked the coolant level, it is full and checked the oil. it is nice and clean. Is it possible that the head is still still blowing? Or maybe some residue is burning off after the repair. Or is this actually normal and we haven't noticed it before? I am aware that the D-CAT occasionally sprays fuel into the exhaust, what does this look like?
I know that diesel is injected directly into the exhaust, I assume that some of that extra diesel can spray out of the exhaust at times?
Possibly, but I'm more inclined to think it's the contents of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) being burned off, or a mixture of both.
There are at least two methods of filter regeneration, which requires raising the exhaust temperature, to burn off the captured filter contents.
1.The RAV has the 5th injector method.
2.Toyota (and others) also use(d) the post injection method. Diesel is injected by the main injectors, slightly after the main combustion event. This also raises the exhaust temperature. This method has also been know to leave quantities of diesel in the engine oil, diluting it and actually raising the measured "engine oil level" over time, as well as changing the lubrication properties. Another good reason for frequent oil changes.
