I started to notice a smell of damp in the car over the last week. thought the matts may have got wet during all the bad weather we've had recently.i soon ruled that out, and started to have a look around. discovered that the plastic tray in the boot had some water in the jack storage compartment. i removed the plastic tray and found around an inch of water in the metal tub. i removed the two rubber bungs , emptied and dried the area.Next is how does water get in there in the first place. I've checked behind the rear light fittings all bone dry . I've checked the rear door seal all appears good , the top left is slightly loose so i smeared some grease on. as its lipped can't see how water would get through. never had a problem for the last 7 or so years so started to think what's changed. 1. my neighbour got out of his car while it was still in auto and did some very minor damage to my rear bumper. being a reasonable guy he paid for Mr T to supply and fit a new one. 2. earlier this year i had a witter tow bar fitted to carry bikes. its a mystery to me. any ideas?

My mums mk3 Yaris (horrible car) had a leaky boot. Turned out one of the rear light lenses didn't have its rubber seal fitted. Seal was fitted, boot stopped leaking.

On the Corolla i had similar issue - it was the rear right light cluster - the seal got old (consider it was then 18years old...)- put new rubber (neoprene tape) and problem was solved.

Wonder if one or both rear lights were removed when rear bumper was replaced (can't think why necessary but.....)and then not re-fitted correctly?

also have a problem with the electrics with my new tow bar. rang towbar company who have arranged to get it sorted. while i was on the phone i asked how they get access to the wiring. you've guessed it, they remove a rear light cluster!!!. im not impressed. they are going to fix it and i wonder if i should give them a new seal?. or can they be reseated or ??. thanks all for pointing me to rear light cluster.
