Hi,
sorry to bother everyone again, last night my wife noticed that on starting the engine it seemed slow to turn over but did start. She didn´t tell me about it.

This morning when I needed the car, the engine turned over a few times and then slowly, was less and less responsive, I hooked up the charger for 3 hours and it seemed to just get worse until there wasn´t even a ´click´from the starter solenoid. The battery is pretty old so I borrowed a car and bought a new battery and fitted it. I tried the new battery but there was still no response (I was told it was not fully charged). I have had the charger on the new battery for some hours and tried it but still no noise from the starter/solenoid.
As I sit in the car with the ignition on everything was normal, windows would up and down and the lights worked, headlights work.......

I checked the 30A fuse for the starter, it´s ok, Can you guys please point me in the right direction so I can check other things..........

Is the earth cable from the engine/gearbox to the car body sound? If you’ve got power to all the ancillaries, the battery + and - connections would appear to be okay. However if the starter won’t turn, then it would seem that there is a fault in the circuits involving just the kit bolted to the engine.

If I didn't know any better - and to be sure, I don't - I would suggest that the evidence supplied points to the starter motor ... or solenoid, or earth connection to the starter ?

(If you'd managed to blow the fusible link I don't think you'd have any power anywhere but ... )

On my 2004 Rav there were several fuseable links in the one unit on the positive battery post.
To eliminate an earth issue you could put a jump lead from the negative battery terminal to a good clean earth on the engine or preferably a starter motor mounting bolt if it's accessible ?

Hi guys,

Tried an extra earth to the Neg/- on the battery, same problem.
This car has no fusible link near the Pos/+ terminal on the battery.
BUT
I had my son try to start while I listen and there´s a faint click, click, click, click, click noise from the starter motor area.

Tomorrow I´ll get a few quotes locally, there´s four workshops within 7 km from here and have roadside service drop the car off on the weekend.

Other than that I´m happy to hear more comments/suggestions....... I´m retiring in August after 50 working years (camera repair apprentice at 17), I´d have a go myself if I had a spare car.

I think I read a post somewhere about someone who fitted an up-rated starter moror to their RAV.
The clicking sounds like a faulty solenoid? And as you've tried, but I'd still add an extra earth strap from battery to engine and to bodywork. An auto-electrician might be the best bet.

The RAV4 was taken to Toyota and a new starter motor fitted, seems that a 2007 starter motor might get brushes and solanoid problems.... all fixed now. Starts like a new car now....... thanks again for all your help guys!
