Can I safely fit 225.55.17....? Got chance of 4 with 7 total miles on them.....reply urgent pleaseful.

A quick scan of the web seems to indicate that you should be OK. The deciding issue is rim width but you're not going down by much so it shouldn't be an issue. The only caveat with fitting a narrower tyre would be the risk of kerbing the alloys but as you're only going down 10mm and you are hardly likely to be doing donuts, I wouldn't think the risk is great.
Most people seem to want to know if they can go UP width-wise from 225 to 235+. There's lots of calculators on the web. In any event, as a fall-back, no tyre fitter is likely to fit an unsafe tyre/rim combo.

My 4.3 was fitted with 225's when it was new so shouldn't be an issue. Like a lot of people I run 235's now cause they are slightly larger in diameter and make the speedo a little more accurate + as Jim says, "they protect the rims from kerbing a bit better". I'm just waiting to hear that Ash has fitted some F1 rear tyres to his good lady's RAV to protect the bumper ends :yes:

I was offered a free pair of boots the other day. Brand new and unworn by thier deceased owners wife ....
What size are young Charlie she asked.... Anywhere between size 6 and 16 says I .....😜

I think that the difference in diameter and what it does to the accuracy of the speedometer is what concerns many people. Even with 235's on mine is still optimistic by 2 - 3 MPH at 50 so the original tyres must have been worse than that. Would agree that the difference between 235 and 225 width will make no difference to the handling etc. The make of tyre is much moreof an issue. Nobody seems to have come up with a tyre design that is anything like the Bridgestone runflats fitted to the 180.

Currently on WIFE's Rav as original postification, Philip........cracking deal but letting them go........great point from some of you guys about kerbing protection, and considering getting alloys professionaly blastified and redone in the spring........225 tempting fate, albeit I have asked her to copy lotsa other wimmenz and just park then walk to the pavement......!!

And Google tells me that the Granite came with 225/55 R17 as standard so BK would be going back to the standard tyre size by fitting them! |
