Thought I would do a quick look at the "years of the drivers" ...
Schumacher
2000: Schumacher won WDC by 19 Points; in 2nd place with 3 races left; Teammate 4th
2001: Schumacher won WDC with 123 Points (nearly twice that of 2nd placed McLaren driver)
2002: Schumacher won WDC by 67 Points; Ferrari won 15 out of 17 races
2003: Schumacher won WDC by 2 Points; 3 drivers from 3 teams could have won with 2 races left, 2 drivers still in the running on last race
2004: Schumacher won WDC by 34 Points;
Vettel
2010: Vettel won WDC by 4 points; 5 different winners in first 7 races; any of 5 drivers from 4 different teams could have won WDC with 2 races to go.
2011: Vettel won WDC by 122 points!
2012: Vettel won WDC by 3 points; 7 different winners in first 7 races! Teammate finished 6th
2013: Vettel won WDC by 155 points! Total Dominance in second half of season; Teammate 3rd on half the points.
Hamilton
2014: Hamilton won WDC by 67 points; Mercedes 1st and 2nd
2015: Hamilton won WDC by 59 points; Mercedes 1st and 2nd
2016: Hamilton lost WDC by 5 points; Mercedes 1st and 2nd
2017: Hamilton won WDC by 46 points;
2018: Hamilton won WDC by 88 points; Teammate 5th
With Lewis Hamilton, the combination of the best driver AND a mostly unbeatable car has resulted in a basically done deal in terms of the team and little real sustained competition to the team and also from his teammate for the last 6 years (including this year)
But both Schumacher and Vettel could very easily have won two titles less and chased hard by different teams and wasn't consecutively dominant years in the same way Mercedes are doing now. But can't blame Mercedes or Lewis for that, just the other teams who are not performing (especially Ferrari with their inempt teamwork and strategy).
