As yet no. I am going to leave it with the garage that we use, over Christmas, while we are back in UK. The problem is intermittent, and generally seems to reoccur when under heavy load or during a long run. It's not too bad at the moment! If it's intermittent then it is unlikely to be the g/b ECU; if it was and you're still driving it, it would have eaten itself by now! Something much less scary, thank goodness. :TU:

Could it be something as simple as the spark plugs? They are very long life so often get forgotten about as a required service item. When (miles/time) were they last replaced?

Good point, Hoovie min.......and I repeat repeat.......get an arsehole spray of MAF Sensor Cleaner, remove air filter housing......all of it, as screws difficult to reach, remove MAF Sensor multiplug, spray internals.....MUST DRY THOROUGHLY AND NOT BE POKED WITH ANYTHING......replacement is reverse of removal as Haynes would say. Road test. As Jimbob says, gearbox would have waved you goodbye by now and not been intermittent, albeit the faulty one I test drive took 15 minutes for the fault to manifesticate. Sorry.....should read aerosol spray.......typo.......lol.

Update! This fault, seems more prevalent when under stress, like steep climbs. Also seems mostly OK from cold, some days no problem, others, occasional shudders. Sometimes it seems to select the wrong gear, then defaults to the correct one. Occasionally, it seems like the clutch is slipping, and lacks acceleration. Other times, it will seem to stick in a low gear when slowing down in over run, almost to the point of appearing to stall, but it doesn't. It's a weird one!!

Have you checked all of the vacuum hoses for cracks or leaks? They can sometimes cause the most difficult to find problems. Have you had a code reader hooked up to see if there are any fault codes stored? Sorry if that sounds too basic but sometimes the simple things are overlooked. I'm certainly no expert but even though it may not be the "classic" g/b ECU problem, might it still be a fault with the ECU? If you eliminate all the mechanical causes then you are only left with electronic. If you are going to be laying up the car whilst in the UK why not take the ECU out and bring it with you? You can send/take it to ECUtesting to have it checked out. If it's OK, they only make a nominal handling charge. If it's faulty and they can repair it, they give a lifetime guarantee.

Another update! So, from December until now the RAV has struggled on. The gearbox oil was changed and that definitely improved the problem, but it has now slipped back to its old faulty ways! The fault code now coming up is 0755 (Shift solenoid B) and as we are coming back to the UK for most of the summer, I will bring the ECU back for testing. More later!!

Back now in Spain, and the rebuilt ECU from ECUtesting is back in the RAV. Two days of driving, and not a judder in sight! So joy, looks like £255 has been well spent. Also the fuel consumption is better, and I hope the emissions will improve as it nearly failed the Spanish MOT before we left. So to ECU testing!
