I'm trying to source a fairly cheap car for a family member and trawling the various selling websites it would appear that the Toyota Auris or Avensis would be good (he's not a fashion bandit, obviously!) and they are priced well against Skoda Octavias and the like. I'm drawn to Toyotas because of our past good experience with them and certainly as far as the petrol 2.0 was concerned, they were bullet-proof. However, he wants diesel and I recall that there were problems with the RAV4.3 diesels and wondered if those problems were the same with Auris and Avensis.
The engines appear to be 2.0 and 2.2 D4D's and the cars tend to have 60K + miles up.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I had the 2.0L diesel Auris '59 plate, capable car, in fact I felt it pulled the caravan better than the Rav4, even though the caravan was bigger than the Auris should pull, (I only used it to take it to & from storage). But I never really liked it, never got on with the driving position & the gearstick coming out of the dash. My daughter has it now & loves it, so it's personal choice, it's been in the family 4 years (I think) never had an issue, other than brakes, tyres etc. sails through MOT each year.

Given the earlier wee cars use the same 2AD engines as the earlier RAV4 I would avoid and go for a 2.0

Jim, a very few of the earliest 4.3 RAVs had an oil consumption problem and Toyota did replacement short engines to resolve the problem. My brother and I bought a pair of identical 4.3 XT5's in April 2008 - i.e. very early in their history. Mine had a replacement engine at 32,000 miles and has now done 83,000. It has used no oil between twice yearly oil changes since about 36,000. I bought my brothers off him for my daughter when it was 2 years old and she did over 100,000 in it on the same engine. That one used no oil from new and was kept on "minimum services" as she was not particularly flush with money having 3 youngsters to bring up. The EGR valve on mine gets cleaned about every 18 months but really gets very little soot these days. The 2.0D-4D had problems with the DMF but I've never heard of one failing on the 4.3. Hope that helps PS How's your bike riding going these days? I guess that this summer was probably some sort of encouragement! PPS I've a mate who lives near Vichy in France who has a 2003 2.0D-4D Avensis that must have done about 250,000kM by now without any problem at all. He'd love to replace it but can't imagine getting anything else as reliable.

Thanks for the feedback; much appreciated.
My bike-riding is almost non-existent, I'm afraid to say, despite the good summer which should have meant wall-to-wall ride-outs. However, my balance isn't the best now (we do yoga every week and the one-legged stuff just leaves me for dead) and I gave myself a bit of a fright on my last ride when I seemed to fail to realise that the throttle goes a different way to slow down!! I've thought about selling the VFR and getting something smaller/lighter but I hate to give in to the thought that perhaps I'm just not up to it anymore.......sigh

Family member seems not really know what he wants although he does have a soft spot for the Skoda Octavia. Good car that it is, there ain't many in his budget - about £3k, unless he wants stellar mileage, which he doesn't. He seems to believe the "official" MPG figures which of course are bollocks and doesn't see that servicing/reliability may actually save him money. Must admit that is why I lean towards Toyota.....

I've a near neighbour, a very sensible guy, who had a Yeti. It was quite a reasonable motor returning a respectable MPG until the manufacturer updated the EMU software to remove the "VW cheat mode". After that the consumption was so bad that he sold it!
