Wishing to change the spark plugs on the 2002 auto petrol as no idea when they were last changed. A certain young Glaswegian who has emigrated to colder climes suggested iridium plugs. so where is the best place to buy/ and or what make is recommended please?
I have read a previous post about soaking the plug hole with whisky to help loosen/facilitate removal. I assume I sniff the loosening agent and soak the plug hole with cheap whisky.
And after rummaging around my box of bottled fluids, found a MAF aerosol bought years ago...so that'll get done when the weather reaches above -9C

Denso or NGK I would think Bothy. Denso are five of our english pounds each more expensive on ECP just now - depending on which iridium version you go for. www.eurocarparts.com/spark-plugs

I would only buy DENSO as that’s the brand Toyota use . As to getting the plugs out …that’s another story ! The double edge sword with long life plugs (60k I believe), that’s a long time to never be removed. When I took mine out I sprayed WD40 down the plug holes, then with a wobble end extension on a ratchet then applied pressure to remove. You’ll get that crack like you undo with tight wheel nuts, the crack you don’t want is the plug porcelain breaking. The wobble drive extension allows more sideways movement as the plug releases….and from experience less change of breaking the plug. The next problem I had was one plug was tight all the way out, I was thinking damage thread but turned out to be more carbon on the bottom of the thread . This is a wobble drive extension….. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232514233550

Thanks ! Wobble bars and plugs ordered. (Removed the ecu on the 2002 auto this morning in an hour and a half...outside with the temperature at -8C....sent away to get the ecu tested; mainly for peace of mind that it won't knacker the auto box.) Changing the plugs might wait until the temperature is more bearable.

Boffs….please also TORQUE the plugs back in……torque setting is surprisingly low which I got from Andy or Don. If you ever need to remove them, and they have been overtightened by guessing……ouch…..expensive. Smallish torque wrench came in very handiful.

And no lubricant required - the threads will have a corrosion and anti seize coating on them.

somehow, I'm the proud owner of 2 torque wrenches. I'd read that the plugs aren't torqued tight.
Oddly, I checked the tyre pressures last week. Fronts 31 and 19. rears 21 and 13. Explained why the steering was heavy. Downside - can feel the potholes !

Thank you for this. The plugs arrived Friday along with another parcel of wobbly sockets. As the ecu is away getting tested, I will wait until I get the ecu back in; and check the car starts! Then do the plugs nexty.

Then do the plugs nexty. Did you send it to ECUtesting? Just take care when you get it back (assuming they’ve had to re-flash it) that you follow the “running-in” instructions to the letter. Otherwise the ECU’s baseline parameters will be f@*cked up.

On removal, I found the ecu had 2 seals on the case saying warranty would be void if case opened. So I guess it may have been flashed before. No idea, so best safe than sorry. I'll follow any instructions...thank you for the alert.

I’d be interested to see the instructions when you get them Ian 👍🏻👍🏻 So would I. Sent ecu on Wednesday 14 December 2022. It arrived at ecutesting on the following day. I was quoted a 2-3 day turnaround..... just as well I didn't hold my breath.
Patience now gone, I emailed them on Tuesday evening this week....as I couldn't get them to answer their phone. I got a message the following morning 08.20 - yesterday - to say my account had a new message...so I logged on to find an update - the ecu was faulty and to pay £259 to enable despatch that afternoon by DHL. Payment made and confirmed immediately; and I got confirmation from them that it was despatched.
Then DHL emailed to say they'd collected it and would be delivered today by 6pm. aye right
2 DHL vans deivered to houses nearby, so by 4.30pm I checked the tracking on DHL (it had infomed me in the morning the parcl was in the Glasgow Express depot) The tracking update told me it 'was on hold' and now due for delivery Wednesday 28th. Suitably infuriated, I drove to the DHL depot and waited an hour to be seen.....then had to ask for a manager as the girl assistant said she wasn't able to access the parcel. The manager went off and came back 20 minutes later to say he can't find it and that ecutesting should never have used a 24 hour service at this time of year.
Sorry - I thought it was common knowledge that Jesus had a birthday every year at this time, and that one should plan acordingly.
The manager suggested I try calling tomorrow. They may find it by then. So I will attend the depot tomorrow morning and armed with a flask of coffee, sit until they find the ecu.
if anybody fancies trying to get an ecu tested, I would avoid ecutesting. Its no way a 2-3 day turnaround.
